Recording without tempo?
Recording without tempo?
pretty new to live, i tried looking in the manual to answer my question and i couldnt find anything, im pretty sure i know the answer already but maybe im missing something..
does anyone know if theres a way to record audio into live but not have it be at a specific set tempo from the start? basically i use serato to dj and i want to use live just to record a mix in to it but i dont want lives global tempo to be active.
i guess i could get around this by using my KP3 as the master and live as the slave but sometimes the kp3s auto tempo is a bit spotty and i dont want it resulting in my mix sounding weird or off-sync/warped at times. i imagine there are probably other ways around this as well. if any of you guys can offer any help id appreciate it. thanks in advance.

Re: Recording without tempo?
the tempo doesn't matter. just go for it.
what you'll find is that you can record into Live at any tempo then you click on the clip to open clip view and in there you tell Live what bpm the clip is at. if warp is off then the global tempo won't affect your clip, if it's on then you can change the tempo at which your clip plays.
it's kind of an odd concept to wrap your head around because tempo is all relative.

Re: Recording without tempo?
i kind of had a feeling this would be the case.
so basically i can record it into live and then just make sure warp is off so global temp doesnt affect it and then when i bounce the mix out itll be at whatever bpm the mix itself is?

Re: Recording without tempo?
that should work. I only say should because I've never actually done that but it should work.
if you wanted to tidy the mix up, enter the clip's bpm in clip view, set Live to that bpm and you can do warp marker edits, add effects synched to the bpm, stuff like that.

It works that way. Just record, and you don't even have to turn off the warp mode of the clip; as long as you don't change global tempo settings warping won't affect on your recordings.Tone Deft wrote:that should work. I only say should because I've never actually done that but it should work..

Re: Recording without tempo?
I am tempted to buy live tomorrow (as it's on offer) and didn't hear back from support...
can I do the same sorta thing BUT record in using midi and triggering a VST ? I'd just like it to suss out the tempo when I hit stop..
I asked my friend who "supposedly" knows how to use live and he didn't know.
thanks in advance

Re: Recording without tempo?
thanks chapelier fou. so when I stop , would it set to say 4 or 8 bars or whatever? I did see the thing with half / double time BUT it was referring to audio transients
I'm used to cubase / sonar / reason.. and find how I work in all 3 different in a good way, so thought I'd try the full live.. either that or I have bad GAS hehe

Re: Recording without tempo?
ha maybe i misunderstood... Do you want live to guess the tempo after you hit stop ? Cause it won't.
But maybe what you want is just 'tap tempo', activate the metronome, and record.

Re: Recording without tempo?
I can do tap tempo already in other things.. no interest to me, in that respect.. I'd rather just record on the fly and then it tell me the tempo AFTER I hit stop or whatver key to say end of loop
I know the audio is elastic , but what about midi ?
so it knows to make it say 4 or 8 bars AND tell me the tempo from that..

Re: Recording without tempo?
Well if you record Via the "looper" there is the option "tempo control" wich you can actually put on "set and follow song control" and it works perfectly fine as long as it's the first thing you do and it tells you exactly the tempo of it and adapts the session and the global tempo as long as it's the first thing you do in the song. (if you allready have a tempo installed it will just tell you how much bars and strange signature it is relative to the original tempo)
