Trigger Finger doesn't map to Drum Rack
Trigger Finger doesn't map to Drum Rack
Hey Folks,
I can't quite figure this one out and could use some help. I recently bought a Trigger Finger to go along with my Live 7 upgrade. I've used Enigma to upload the Ableton Live defaults but half of the time when I load up a drum rack, the trigger finger doesn't map. If I understand right, the 16 pads on the TF should map directly to the the 16 drum sounds currently viewed in the rack. If I move the vertical slider up or down the TF should map to whatever's showing. Half of the time, this works great, but half of the time it doesn't and I have anywhere from 2-4 TF pads all mapping to the same drum sound. Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Noah

HI Noah,
please reload the factory presets to your Trigger Finger using Enigma. On the TF, choose preset 1 one then. Make sure it´s selected as a control surface in Live´s Midi/Sync preferences and track/remote are active for its´input ports.
The pads should now map instantly to the Drum Racks.
Best,
Jörg

Got some of it...
Hi Jorg,
Thanks for the help. I got TF to map right with the Drum Racks. Here are the steps I followed for anyone else who needs them:
1) Launch Enigma
2) Select "Trigger Finger Defaults" from top left panel
3) Select #11 - "Ableton Live Setup" in lower left panel
4) Click 'Upload' button
5) Make sure the Trigger Finger is setup in Live's MIDI prefs. I turned 'Track' and 'Remote' on
6) On the TF - Hit the 'Memory Recall' button
7) Select P1.
Now I'm still having some other related issue. I got the TF to work with Impulse by scrolling through the presets (or is that positions?) until the TF pads were sending notes in the right octave. But I tried to use it with Operator and now I'm back to the TF pads playing random notes. I feel the answer is similar to the Drum Rack problems answer so any explanation of what's going on is much appreciated. I'd like to understand the underlying problem.
Thanks again,
Noah

Hi Noah,
if you choose the Impulse preset on your Trigger Finger, you should be able to use it to play a major scale (C3-C4) on software instruments like Operator .

Still Not Working For Me
Sorry to a pain the ass guys, but this still isnt working for me. I tried using enigma to reset the default settings.... follow the steps above... but it's still acting up. My bottom left pad (P1) is mapped right but then what should be P2 is actually P4.
Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong... this is driving me crazy!

HI Glack,
please be sure to have selected preset 1 in your TF if you want to use it with Drum Racks. Also don´t forget to select your Trigger Finger as a control surface in Midi/sync preferences.

Re: Trigger Finger doesn't map to Drum Rack
None of these tips are working for me. I wish I could see a list of what each TF pad is supposed to be sending (to make it work when I arrow up/down in a Drum Rack).
I have a feeling my "default" settings for TF must have been edited by me in the past. Or maybe I've done something else wrong. Following the tips listed above did nothing to change the fact that my TF fires only some sounds, like the one in the lower left corner of the default key range, but not others. The lower left pad on my TF, in other words, triggers a sound, as happened for glack.

Re: Trigger Finger doesn't map to Drum Rack
Hi mooncaine,
if you´ve edited the factory settings of your TF, then simply reset them to the default ones. The Drum Racks work with preset 1:
Load up Enigma.
Here load the first preset "GM Midi drums" over to your trigger finger.
-> click the preset -> go to File menu > send to device (trigger
finger).
The preset will be sent over to the trigger finger.
Make sure that you send the preset to your trigger finger, just selecting it does not work.
"SYS" will be shown on the trigger finger when the preset has been
sent over.
Quit enigma.
Now load Preset 1 of the trigger finger:
Press "memory recall" and then press Pad 1 (P1).
Boot up Live and select the "trigger finger" as *Control Surface* in the Midi/Sync page of Live's preferences.
Select also an input and an output port for it -> USB trigger finger.
Control surfaces: Input port Output port:
*Trigger Finger *USB trigger finger USB trigger finger
For the Trigger finger input midi port you need to have set the
"TRACK" & "REMOTE" Buttons to "ON".
Now check if e.g. the drum rack works with the Trigger finger.
Make sure the blue hand symbol is visible in the top bar of the drum rack.

Re: Trigger Finger doesn't map to Drum Rack
If you want to map ableton's drum rack just hit memory recall + p10 why go through so much for so little?
Re: Trigger Finger doesn't map to Drum Rack
I found that if you use a different usb port than you initially installed the trigger finger with, ableton live will not show "USB Trigger Finger" as a selectable option in the preferences/midi control surface input and output boxes at the top of the menu.
This will cause the trigger finger's pads to map incorrectly to the drum racks.
If you want to use a different usb port you have to install the trigger finger manually telling windows new hardware installion wizard to look for the C:\Program Files\M-Audio\M-Audio Series II MIDI (most likely location) ma_cmidi.inf file.
If you install the trigger finger incorrectly without the correct driver (sometimes windows has trouble with this step), the trigger finger will never work correctly in that particular usb port.
Hope this helps someone!

Re: Trigger Finger doesn't map to Drum Rack
Awesome advice. I was following the generous instructions from Jörg but they weren't working for me. Don't know why.abort wrote:If you want to map ableton's drum rack just hit memory recall + p10 why go through so much for so little?
But "hit memory recall + p10" did the trick. Thanks!
So here's the dumb question:
Where did you read/learn that? It's not at all clear to me from the manual that that is what would happen.

In general, the Trigger Finger appears to have so many features that getting the basics to work easily is an afterthought or was designed with a more savvy user than some of us are, in mind.
Re: Trigger Finger doesn't map to Drum Rack
followed all the instructions above and basically here is where i'm at;
i have windows 7 64bit and running ableton 7
and can't get my trigger finger to make sounds, in fact i can't even load the ableton presets
from Enigma though i have done in the past on win xp sp3 and havent changed it since then so shouldnt need to, but still a worry...
control surface and input is trigger finger, output is soundcard, midi port - input - trigger finger - track and remote are on, any ideas?

Re: Trigger Finger doesn't map to Drum Rack
Had you made sure the TB was setup through abletons preferences setup section? Are you using the TB through normal midi programming and not mackie mode? Did you by chance plug this in through another usb port and not realize it? Is windows actually detecting this device as a removable usb media device?
Re: Trigger Finger doesn't map to Drum Rack
windows 7 64bit & windows 7 32bit
ableton 7
enigma 1.2 (xp sp2 and xp sp3 compatability modes)
windows recognises trigger finger as usb composite device
enigma does not recognise trigger finger, when refreshing devices on both laptops and oprtaing systems enigma gives error - not enough memory for task
ableton 7 - i go to option > preferences > midi sync > control surface - trigger finger,
input - trigger finger, output - microsfot gs wavetable synth > mid ports - in put - trigger finger > track - on, remote - on
i can't manually map pads via midi either so i guess either ableton is not recognising the trigger finger or i've set it up wrong.
don't know where i'm going wrong, have had it working before in xp and i think vista, maybe it's just a windows 7 thing.

Re: Got some of it...
I followed these instructions... and I can't get all 16 pads to show up at once. It does a "better" job... but I wish I could just throw on the 808, and immediately have all 16 pads filled up, without having to highlight which group of samples i want to play first. It just seems counter-intuitive... not only that... the drum machines window doesn't get big enough to quickly sort thru the samples.
How do I fill up all 16 pads immediately, when setting up a stock kit (without having to move around the samples by hand?)
