Why I am not afraid to take your money, by Amanda Palmer
Re: Why I am not afraid to take your money, by Amanda Palmer
I agree with her 86.7% but her music sounds like a whale singing along to a giraffe one man band that fell over a style and is tumbling down a rather steep and rocky hill.

Does she not know about the Shift key?

Amanda Palmer = partner of Neil Gaiman. Probably dosn't need to sell much music.
She's very sweary - that's, like, so cool and grown up!

I like the gist of this blog entry and agree with it
don't know her music but the point is valid regardless
Everyone has to decide for themselves what is worth what, myself, I decided that avoiding abject poverty was more important than making music all the time for now, but I admire her courage

does shje get naked? how did she make 10K form a pod cast. I scrolled through her thing but I didn't get any clear answers to those questions (the second might be answered if the first is positive). . .
Cool chick though whatever the flex. . .

I slipped into a daze, whilst I was there I heard the most startling music, it was at once familiar and alien, reassuring and unsettling.

so she's the first person to ever ask fans for money directly huh? Sorry but she's no pioneer. What I saw in that blog was someone desperate for vindication... I guess the title would elude to as much, but her very good point was unfortunately buried under her obnoxious self proclaimed "pioneering".
But it's a good conversation to have.
Can I have some $ now too
please?

Her refusal to use grammar rules is just one of the annoying affectations of her writing style. Too cool for school.

so how much does she make a year as an artist?

Dunno, but sounds like we'll be finding out, at least roughly...nebulae wrote:so how much does she make a year as an artist?
I saw her play live the other day here in Berlin at a pay-whatever-you-think-it's-worth gig. First time I'd ever heard her music. I was blown away. And she has bigger balls than 90% of most men, and 99.9% of people on this forum, myself included.and for the last 10 years, i have been working my ass off in a different way: tirelessly making music, traveling the world, connecting with people, trying to keep my balance, almost never taking a break and, frankly, not making a fortune doing it. i still struggle to pay my rent sometimes. i’m still more or less in debt from my last record. i’ll lay it all out for you in another blog. it’s just math.

She's right that she's entitled to make a living from music and associated spin offs from music - no one ever asked how much musicians made for interviews and rarely for public appearances and most of us knew and had no issue with the fact they made cash from it, it was the normal thing.
Nowadays, everyone is a musician, most of whom want to be paid, but the 'lazy generation' (as quoted by Bjorn from ABBA), who sit around smoking weed and ripping off everything through torrents with no intention to buy anything puts a serious dent into this. Everyone has something to sell in a world where very few want to buy. This is why many kids are at still living at home with their parents well into their 30s these days and no longer kicked out at age 18 as previously.
I also seriously doubt that she is starving, but she has other choices - like me, if you can't make a living from music full time, then look for another career / job which WILL put food on the table and be regular enough so you can pay the mortgage etc. I dicked around for 7 years in bands and working in studios for peanuts and free drinks, but there comes a time when you gotta pay the bills, so if music isn't doing that for you, then move on and keep it as an enjoyable hobby and something to act as a fun buffer from the crud of daily life. Heck, even do the odd gig here and there and put out your own music, for free or for money (if you want to sell like 10 copies in a good year and 6 of those were to your family, in a good year)
It's really that simple - this is how modern life is. You can be the greatest musician alive and never make it, many major label artists, even some with hits, are living in squats and have no money, they have a name and the label owns every piece of them. In many cases, even the label is not making money.

Well, I only really know what I heard at that concert, but, in rubbish youtube quality, here's my favourite song she played - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBvEy-3muvE - I still get goosebumps hearing that. And here's an example of some of the action on the front line - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OM36Cgomn0nebulae wrote:^ links on youtube?
