Choosing a Midi Controller.

Post by azzy » Mon Oct 05, 2009 5:23 pm

Hi! i have started using Live 8 within the past week, i also started with Reason 4 a month ago.
Im hoping with practice i can be fully confident to use Live 8 for creating my music, and playing it on stage.

Anyway im looking to buy myself ( for christmas :D ) a good Midi controller for Live, and im having trouble picking..
My Budget can easily get an Akai APC 40, but since i am only starting with live, i am a little cautious starting with a controller dedicated to live ( since i use reason also) So i was also thinking about the Akai MPD32 since it isnt dedicated to live, but if i do then i sacrafice some great capabilities that the APC40 offers within live.
And now we have Novation's Launchpad to add into the Mix! ... hmmm descisions. As you can see i am quite new to live, and i have a large qauntity of midi controllers to choose from. The pricing isnt really the issue here.

If anyone could help or reccomend an appropriate midi device, i would be most obliged.

Peace
Azzy

One that's not in that list is the BCR2000.

those things are amazing for the money :)

BCF is meant to be pretty good too, although I don't have one.

But from that list, the APC is a good buy, then augment it with a BCR and a padKONTROL / MPD18.
Some stuff, and some other stuff. Honest.

would the BCR2000 not be redundant if i was using the APC40? since the apc40 has faders already?

hi,

why not a novation remote sl mk1(has two lcd screens),usable both with reason and live.plus they're supercheap these days.
and a launchpad.
cost less combined than an apc-40.

Not in the US...

This question highly depends on what you are doing. Straight DJ'ing, recording/studio work, or something else.

Well, the launchpad may be the ticket for you w/ a novation sl 25 IMO. You'll get many of the features of the APC, but you'll also get a keyboard as well which is nice for production.

For my setup I use the 25sl for keys and pre-programmed effects that are on my track groups and master track along w/ the MPD 18 for drum beats, and the APC 40 for individual track control. This is a perfect music production setup for me.

BCR is a shedl;oad of rotaries, I find it very useful for DJ work, but don't use it much in my studio stuff.

you'd be better off with a keyboard, as someone suggested, but I'd definitely get the APC, it's very very useful!

Or save the money and get the nativeKontrol app for it which has a drum rack mode.

I have tht, and I still bought an MPD18, it's way nicer to tap out beats on and I can use it for live stuff ;)
