yup, if he really has been part of a top 40 song, then you need to learn something, before discussing app A vs app B, cause he knows what it boils down to. and you are apparently not.

besides, just ignore, if it really bothers you.

let me clarify, he didnt have anything to do with the song, he interned at a studio who had a top 40 song.

Just ignore it, really simple.

they are all just tools, talking about live as "creative" is funny, thou...
it's the person behind it. never ever the tool someone uses that makes the music.
besides PT is and never was made to 'create' any music, it's a tracking and mix tool,
the creation is coming from the musicians behind it, actually live is not much different,
only difference is that it is designed to make a 'creation' process simpler...
but has drawbacks in other 'uses'

however, the quality and creativity of your music has nothing to do with the tools you use and no one can hear it anyway, except the use of certain 'screw up' effects.

i very personally love live for 'creating' music, live playing and as a efx rack for FOH use, clip efx triggering for theater and events and the like.

for many other uses i prefer different tools.

and in the end no one cares what you use for what, as long as the results are satisfactory.

Comparing ProTools to Live really is Apples to Oranges. They are different beasts intended for different purposes.

Good luck doing a dialogue edit, foley session or 5.1 mix for a feature film with Live. Does this mean PT is better? Of course not. You couldn't pay me to write or arrange music strictly in PT.

Its like arguing the sports car you drive is "better at getting you to work" then the truck a logger needs to get up a mountain.

Who cares about this argument. Some people use Protools some people use Live and some people use an old cracked version of FL Studio to produce their music. It is true that Protools is the industry standard for music and film production. However, that doesn't mean that it should be your standard! At some point you have to just pick a DAW and make some music regardless of what people say about your DAW of choice. I use Reason all the time and many people continue to dismiss that program as a poor sounding noobie tool.

Maybe you should write your own daw to be a truly electronic composer ;) People get served with technology from everywhere and just need to push a button...

Longing for max4live, would be great to have some experimental evolution and open development within live.

Over the course of the next few weeks, slowly let him think that he's convinced you to switch to PT. Tell him you sold Live and a bunch of stuff you own so you could afford a HD192 interface. As time wears on, let him think that you're getting better and better with PT. Then tell him you recorded a few bands here and there.

Eventually tell him you got an internship at a big name studio in your city and record professionally. Keep building and building until you eventually tell him that it's your last day at your current job because you got a contract with Interscope or some huge record label. On your last day, say your goodbyes and wish each other well.

Then show up to work the next day as normal and tell him it was all a lie and you are still using Live and PT sucks. HA GOT YOU GOOD YOU FUCKER!

Fuck em! People dont get it... You mention Live and they treat you like your some kind of newb who doesnt know shit about audio. I think they think your a fuckin DJ or something if you mention Ableton Live.. It's a wierd phenomenon.. I'm so fuckin sick of hearing that pro tools bullshit, day in and day out... That software makes me want to fuckin punch somebody.. I'm not even joking.. Pro Tools users remind me of the way MAC users go on and on and about how great their MACS are.. Pro Tools users do ALMOST the same fuckin thing... The ONLY thing pro tools has that I would EVER want is beat detective... Big fuckin whooopdy dooo though...

Plus, who the fuck needs DSP cards these days?? That's thier whole gig.. And well, that retarded business model is old news. We have 16 core computers rolling out soon and thats MORE THEN ENOUGH power for about 95% of the people recording/mixing/editing on their computer. Stick to your guns.. Ableton is for creators... Pro tools is for dick heads with big wallets.. Ignore that silly fucker that doesnt know shit about music.. theres waaaaay too many of those fruitcups in this buisness to be trippin on him.

the ONLY thing PT has that other platforms don't is really stable DSP technology. Which is slowing reaching it's way somewhat into the "home studio" market - but at the same time becoming obsolete as both Mac's and PC's become more and more able to process bigger loads without the DSP. As soon as the "standard" PC can compute as well as the PT cards, it'll be just another platform. I AM a PT user (LE of course), but I spend more time with Ableton than I do PT - because I have more fun with Ableton! Only thing that PT being the "standard" has done for me, has to do with sending files to other studios - and this was mostly with rock bands. And I've NEVER even considered doing any type of electronic music in PT, unless it was to just load a track up to use some plug-in I didn't have on my Ableton computer...lol

So rock on Ableton. 8O

I'd suggest you ask him to stop being so insecure....

PT is good at some stuff, Live is good at some stuff;
they both have their strengths & weaknesses, but there
is no need to be overly defensive or insecure about either
Lets face it, you could make music with either - the music
is in you, not the software..
