Yeah, these days I tend to record environments like my back yard or a city street and use that material for processing into other sounds. If you get a particularly dynamic recording with some interesting transients involved, the fast-gating technique mentioned above can work wonders with the right threshold and envelope settings.

could u explain ore on the fast gating techique cause I tried that all day with no luck

thanks in advance

Well, the first thing to make sure of is that your recording is dyanmic to begin with, i.e. there are plenty of little spikes punctuated by lots of quiet parts. Although fast gating will work on material that isn't particularly dynamic, the effect is definitely more pronounced if the material bounces around a little in level.

When you have some good source material the next thing is to simply play back the sound in Live. Drop a Gate device on the track set the threshold all the way up. Now, while the audio is playing, slowly bring the threshold control down until you start to hear bits of the audio coming through. At some point, the threshold will be at just the right place that the sound comes through in sporadic bursts. Now you have some great source material for glitches - experiment with various devices like redux and distortions at different settings to accentuate the glitchiness. Maybe I'll make a video in the next couple of days showing my version of this technique if enough people are interested.

I did a video today which illustrates one variation on the technique we discussed earlier:

I sometime wonder why people like Alva Noto, or Autechre, or Apparat, Mouse on Mars, Michael Fakesch .... etc ... etc don't do clinics. It seems like hordes of people would be interested. Is it because they do not wish to give away their secrets? Or has no one simply though of it?
