How to control Ableton via Guitar Rig 4/Rig Kontrol?

Post by shtreimel » Thu Oct 08, 2009 4:14 am

Anyone figure this out? According to NI, Rig Kontrol sends MIDI msgs to DAWs. So I should be able to stomp on a pedal in RK and turn on/off a switch in Ableton.

Has anyone figure out how to do this yet?

I was told when I called NI that the Rig Control sends a unique protool and not MIDI CC's

I did read on the NI board that it was possible via a MIDI cable but it require you to power the unit with an external power supply. I dont have one yet so I havent tried it.

If you try it let me know what you find out.

My guess is that it will send some MIDI note but that MIDI can not be changed, meaning you wont get to choose the note it'll be what ever it is and thats it.

I'd love to know.

If in fact it leaves you with no choice of what MIDI it sends out, and you're stuck with what it is, then you could use Bomes, is there something like that for Mac OS X?

This is completely incorrect. Firstly, you CAN NOT power Rig Kontrol via battery or power cord. Only USB.

Anyone else?

I had always understood this could not be done because the Rig Kontrol 'talks' directly to Guitar Rig and therefore cannot be use as a general midi controller.

That's why I bought an FCB1010, so I can control both GR and Live with one foot controlled midi-device.

But happy to stand corrected.

Surely easy to test though? Does Live recognise it as a controller in midi prefs? If so, 'remote' it up, go into Live, into midi map mode, and select a function then stomp on a pedal, mapped? Yay or Nay?

I think this is a new thing for the Rig Kontrol.I think the latest update finally made it able to send midi, like they with Kore.

Yeah I stand corrected

There is no external power jack. Man that sucks. I just went and looked.

Goes to show I rarely the thing out of the box. Thanks for correcting me.

I searched for that post on NI board and I couldnt find it.

Goes to show I should dig a bit more before I take advice for 100% truth.

Sorry for misleading.

I'm still not sure how to get this working. So if you figure it out, please share the details. Thanks.

It's probably in the new manual. Go to your account and see if there is something to download about it. There is probably a midi editor and driver of some sort. I'd go to the Guitar Rig forum if nothing else works.

on a side issue to this... and maybe related...

in GR3 i used to be able to configure plugin parameters to next sound and previous sound... so i could switch presets with a button on my midi controller...

in GR4 i can no longer switch these next sound/previous sound parameters... i can other controls, just not these ones...

i'm guessing it's a bug or something...

Unfortunately NI once again laid an egg. Rig Kontrol 3 is the only hardware foot controller that they make that will use the MIDI controller editor.
So if you have RK1 or RK2 you're SOL! I have RK2 and I'm dammed near done with NI after this, just tired of the slash and burn policy they have. Love Absynth, Reactor, Massive, etc. great products, finally really nicely stable, but still shitty support, and disregard for existing users.
