MPC 2000 XL control of ableton

I have gone through a couple different MPC 2000XL's in the last few years, and I must say it proves to be a love hate relationship with the machines when it comes to trying to control Ableton with them. One Machine I had worked flawlessly, plug and play in tandem with and M-audio USB midi sport, at controlling my devices such as drum rack. However, I have never been able to replicate this with the new machine as well as a good friends 2KXL as well.

My question to all is, what are the parameter setting that need to be activated in order to make this setup ( 2000XL>USB Maudio 2X2 Midi Sport>Abelton) work for me. And please, don't tell me to buy a different controller, I know this works, and I obviously love my 2KXL, so I'm trying not to let it go anywhere. I'm not sure if it is a driver thing, or an ableton version thing, but nothing but the Akai machine has changed since the last time it worked.

I've used 2 different 2000xl's with Live, and they've always worked perfectly.

Start by making sure that under Preferences, the 'track' button is lit up next to the Midi Sport 'Midi in' (for controlling drum racks).

Are you sure you have the MIDI out properly configured on the mpc?

Then, swap midi cables.
