APC40 Templates...

Post by bashboosh » Tue Oct 13, 2009 12:13 am

hey guys,
i just got my apc40 and i want to get templates for it and try them out.
i was just wondering, from experience and testing, which templates on the net did u guys stick with?
i know there is the nativekontrol ones and the darren cowely ones.

what is best for djing and what is best for production.
im leaning towards the native kontrol one only because i dont have to buy Bomes for 59 euros to try the darn thing ;)

can u guys help me with my selection...
thanks

You could make your own

Its really easy and you dont need anything you dont already have. Its all about the MIDI map mode in Ableton.

In Live preferences make sure you have the Track Remote and Sync turned on for both the input and the output

I'll start you off, ok so you have eight track. eight volume faders. Remap Cue level to Tempo and its important to ajust the values you see in Lives Browser to a maximum of 127 units. for example it starts at 20 right so go like 20 - 147 that 127. now you have better control of the Tempo. Some choose to only play from like 120 - 150 and that total fine too.

I like to remap my master volume fader to a beat repeat on the master channel. I remap it to the grid and I map "detail view" button to the repeat button. Exit midi map mode and bam instant fun.

i would say save your money for M4L. When it comes out it'll open all those doors you see in the video as well as tons on other stuff.

Its all possible, try stuff out and see what you like.

Hope that helps.

And buy a small label despenser on your local stationary or office stores, to label the functions that you've changed...LOL It's quite helpful.
Equipments: Softwares, hardwares, plastics and metal controllers, computers, headphones, a pair monitor speaker, and electricity to power them up.

i love the midi map and i would love to do it myself.
but,...
1) it never keeps it saved for when you reopen live. all the midi maps are always temporary. How the F**K do you make them permanent???
2) the APC40 template thats built in, i have no idea how to change it and keep it changed, cuz its the same thing as point 1: you change something, it disappears later.

How the hell do i say that these 2 knobs will ALWAYS control the cutoff and resonance on a specific synth, or is it always temporary?
what about the APC40? how does it stay?
thanks man

Simple

"Save As"

The mappings are specific to the live set just save your live set and the next time you open it they will be there.

Are you running a full version of Ableton or just a Demo? With the demo you cant save. Sorry thats the way it goes.

Remember that you can always save a template setup you're happy with, including all racks and track setups with all custom midi mappings as a default template that appears every time you open live, just set it as the default templet in pref's then it's all easy peasy from there.

The initial configuration of the APC is just a fun way of getting to know it so be patient as the reward is up for grabs later!

These are cool, but i prefer to either print them out on label paper or scotch tape them on, so i can use crazy fonts like mummified or monkey love! http://www.dafont.com/mummified.font http://www.dafont.com/monkeylove.font

Why do you need sync. turned on for custom midi mapping?

I'm not really sure. But I just highlight those boxes and the APC works great now. You could probably turn it off and see if anything happens. To be quite honest this is the first time Im even messing with them, as with my Trigger Finger I never turn on any of them and it worked fine. There were times I thought about messing with Mackie Control but never got around to really needing it.

So it goes. Let me know what you find works best.

guys guys guys,
i saved the template and i have the full version purchased straight from ableton and i still cant figure out how to keep everything the way i want it as for midi mapping is concerned.
ok, let me be more specific,
i want sylenth's cutoff and resonance to always be the first two knobs of device control on the apc40. right now they ar controling useless shit like decay and release and stuff like that. whats the point!?
i want cuttoff and resonance for example.
please if anyone could tell me how to do it from experience step by step. cuz once i assign them, and save the liveset, and then reopen it again, it doesnt control the cuttof anymore it freakin goes back to decay and release and all that stuff (original template)
PLEASE HELP ME!
;)

mmm gotta be something weird

Well my first advice would be to use the Track Control Knobs for this hard mapping.

Open an new set drop the sylenth on the MIDI track

press the Send C button of the APC.

Enter MIDI map mode

Click on the Cutoff of the Sylenth and move Knob 1 of Send C. You should see in lives browser that the assignment was made.

Dont touch anything else and exit MIDI map mode.

Move knob and see if the mapping took.

"Save as" Name the Set save to desktop (or where ever)

open open new set. open saved set and check if the mapping remains.

If not enter Midi map mode and see if the mapping in the browser is still their. It should be if not I have no idea why.

Let me know if this works. Sorry to be so dry but I want to see if this helps you.

To me it's not so much that hard mapping track controls is any different as in one one works and one doesnt

They should both work the same. It just that Hard mapping is just that Hard mapping and the device controls can be use for so much more than just hard mapping. The thing about it is if you hard map something it stay mapped to that thing no matter what you have in focus.

Here is an example

two tracks

Track one an Eq3 on Track two a beat repeat.

Device controls give you function of EQ when in Track one and when on Track two they give you beat repeat controls

Say if you hard map Device control Knob 1 to the grid of beat repeat. When your on track one you lose control over what ever knob 1 controlled on the EQ3. It'll still control the grid of track two even though your on track one.

If you really like hard mapping things to the device control there are 8 different banks you could use. Press shift and any of the eight button under the device control will bank you though them.

I'd say start putting things on bank 8 and work then 7 then 6 and so on. this will ensure that bank one will still have its default functions and you can still have your cut off in the Device control

BUT if it doesn't work for you on the Track controls it probably not gonna work on bank eight of the device controls then I dont know what to tell you cause both work great for me.

How do you like that? let me know what you find. Peace Alex

"Monkey love", nice! How the hell are you able to read that font though?
