Sounds to me like half the people who actually make hip hop, rap music, or or rappers/MCs or whatever cant actually say what is what, never mind folks who simply listen to it - not suprising really considering the background of many of the those who defined the genre (not all I might add...) - they will call themselves what they want to call themselves - bollox to what the rest of the world defines things as and anyone who argues gets hacked up with a machette or a several large calibre bullets in them... Then along come those who just follow it and hey - thats their defintions as well. Hence this thread I guess and the confusion about what is rap vs rapmusic vs hip-hop, rappers vs MCs etc.

Rap existed as a means of vocalizing with rhythms and music for centuries - in africa and in europe according to the older (pre hip-hop) more generic and non-bastardised definition fo the term.

yes but that's not in question. that goes for all music we're just talking about
the roots of hiphop and rap here, to some folks detriment. I'm not sure if dude was more upset with me or that second clip of LL cool J

there are still strains that we haven't even brought up yet that are relevant today

hip hop is a culture. it consists of at least five elements

- turntablism

MW your hubris is amusing at times. you don't know shit about rap music.

OK wait? I tell you you're assuming you know what I know and don't know and you consider that a personal attack? Wow?
Then come back with your definition of the difference between hip hop and rap in a thread about what makes a good rapper? Did I ever mention I was interested in the difference? Do you think you're explanation proves your vast knowledge of Hip Hop VS me?

I listened to a lot of Rap/Hip Hop in the 80's and early 90's, nothing you come back with changes that. Yes, I find most of it boring these days, I liked the rougher sound.

Yes, nowadays Hip Hop and Rap are different things. - Plenty of people will tell you that there are plenty of rappers out there who are not Hip Hop at all.

Yes, Hip Hop is both a genre of music and an umbrella name for all related elements etc. not all Hip Hop music without an MC / rapper is going to be called Turntableism.

Some Rappers who play in front of Hip Hop music refer to their music as Hip Hop, to differentiate it from Rap, which they see as commercial.

That's all the things I know about it, mostly from random interviews with Hip Hop musicians; you don't agree with that assessment obviously, and I'm OK with that. I can tell you I'm tired of being told by you what I know and don't know. Look, even if we agree on something, some fucking how it ends up in an argument? it's why I've checked 90% of my replies to something you say. We just don't communicate well together, let it go.
clueless.

A good rapper knows when to shut up.

(I'm entirely serious, let the music speak for itself sometimes, please. Oh and singing for a change would be nice.)
