Hey.... maybe instead of complaining about how other artists that seems to be over rated are getting all the attention, you could just prove that you can do a better job? If you music is really good, It will stand up for itself. Who really gives a fck if Daft Punk has the most mind numming music? Its music, ether you like it or not. So stop complaining and contribute someway..... make some music!
mosca wrote:rubbish, as stated before there were other artists on warp before RDJ showed up who were pushing the envelope (LFO, Black Dog, Sweet Exorcist even).the whole warp catalogue has been influenced by him, well practically
you're probably right tho, i dont particularly like his music therfore i fail to see him as an electronic pionner. But, you can prety much 'slag' everyone in the warp/rephlex genre off and no one bats an eyelid - but dare to say RDJ is not a pioneer nor has he been particularly inventive or influential and woe betide the rath rained down upon you by his fans.
as i said - what exactly did he 'invent'? stuttering breaks? nope, glacial melodies? nope speaker destroying basslines? nope
you're right it is hard to remember who started it all when we're surrounded by so much dross but what sets him appart for all the adulation? what has he done for you lately?
It shows the power of the man that he can release the ludicrously expensive and, on the whole, utter shite analord series and people still lap it up.
but hey, thats my opinion - yours is different - thats what makes the world go round i suppose
mo
I have to agree with Mosca also.
I find RDJ quite overated myself.
And artists like Mark Bell , Black Dog , Autechre, Oval , Scanner , Matmos where / are hardly influenced by him either.
Let alone another 'well known' who wrote under the name of Rythm is Rythm hint hint .......
Go take a listen to tracks like Chaotic Harmony etc ..
Argueably better ambient material was being done by the likes of Visions of Shiva etc at the time and Ambient Works Vol II is nothing Harold/Eno/Budd/Czuckay & Co couldn't have churned out a good 10-20 years earlier either.
RDJ plays the hype game well.
Alot of what he releases is just tossed out quite frankly.
When he actually makes an effort he's incredibly good.
However he could release a CD of glitched based dog farts and alot of the IDM worship fraternity would lap it up .
He owes a hell of alot too early electro pioneers and artists like the Cab's , John Foxx etc etc than he lets on also.
The whole "genius" tag is just a friggin laugh.
My aren't the wings of butterflies beautiful and do they not make wonderful perturbations.....

I feel that I have to stand up for Afx. Hearing his remix for Meat Beat Manifesto's "Mindstream" absolutely changed my life. The same has to be said for Selected Ambient Works II. Without those records, I may have passed off electronic music as rave fodder. IMHO
And thank everyone for not turning this into an Autechre bash. They make records that everyone pans, and yet 3-4 years later, everyone talks about how brilliant the albums is, and everyone else is trying to emulate it. Everyone absolutely trashed Confield, and now, its like put on a pedestal. Unlike Afx, Ae has continued to progress, push boundaries, and inspire.
Now, BOC, Beatles, The Smiths, Radiohead... c'mon people, whether of not you like something, you cannot deny the influencial impact these artists had.
I also feel the need to stand up for Bloc Party, sure they were much better when they were called GANG OF FOUR, but they still make some exciting music, and I think that their enthusiasm is gennuine.

Blah blah blah, history. I know them reasonably well, I'd say, my mum is a big fan. I still think the Smiths wrote better songs. And true, the Smiths wouldn't ever have existed like they did without the Beatles, but without American blues rock there would've never been any Beatles... and so it continues.forgie wrote:A bunch of retarded 5 yr olds with no arms.... this is a matter of musical history. The Beatles MADE history. They wrote songs that were not only innovative and new at the time, but stand up to the test of time, 30-40 years on. Next you are going to accuse Jimi Hendrix of being an over-rated guitarist!
I'd also argue that there was as much innovation in Bowie's Berlin trilogy as in the later Beatles albums, if not more - if one considers that the Beatles were mostly rehashing musique concrete techniques and such.
As for Jimi. I'm a guitarist myself. Not a good one, but I do play. I know his style, I'd say, my old guitar teacher was mad about Jimi, but I don't really find him interesting. Seeing as he is 'widely regarded as the best guitarist ever' when Fripp could kick his arse in any discipline with both hands tied behind his back and blindfolded, I'd say he's overrated, yes.

hehe...see this is where i differ, sure when you sit down and ANALyse jimi's guitar work it probably doesnt come across as something really astounding in retrospect...but [a] it could have been ground breaking at the time - i dont know about this tho jimi hendrix was cool as fuck. 'i stand at the foot of a mountain, chop it down with the side of my hand' + a suitcase full of lsd and a soul as light and pure as air itself.
Hahaha Jimi's legend is not about "kicking ass" or "discipline". Some people just don't get the mojo I guess... if you don't connect with the vibe, you don't connect.
I too am a guitarist, and while I'm about average in my skills, I wholeheartedly respect Jimi as a musician. Some guitarists have an annoying tendency to equate technical proficiency with artistry. The likes of Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen etc never did a thing for me whatsoever. I think that looking up to an artist for their technical skills not their creative skills is misguided, but that's just my opinion.
If you have ever driven down a freeway on a hot summers day with no shoes on, Jimi Hendrix blaring on the stereo smoking a joint out the window, you know the vibe. If you don't know what I'm talking about, the vibe has passed you over and I feel sorry for you!

I wouldn't even call Vai a guitarist. I seriously wouldn't give him that pleasure. He's a disgrace to the instrument. Of all teh stuff I've heard I don't think there's a musical bone in his body. The other two I don't know but as they're always mentioned in the same sentence as him, I'll include them for good measure..forgie wrote:I too am a guitarist, and while I'm about average in my skills, I wholeheartedly respect Jimi as a musician. (Flame proof suit on!)
Fripp, however, has everything I look for in a guitarist. He can play fast but he doesn't when it's not needed. He's continually expirimenting with tone, his melodies are just weird enough to be interesting but are never completely atonal, and his groove and timing are just amazing. It's the way he can float over funk, I mean, listen to what he does with David Sylvian. He's a true musician.
I don't drive. I sit in dark rooms and geek.forgie wrote:If you have ever driven down a freeway on a hot summers day with no shoes on, Jimi Hendrix blaring on the stereo smoking a joint out the window, you know the vibe. (Yes, geek is a verb)

Paws, sup? How you been?
I haven't posted in months... but you drew me out of lurk mode with that one
I'd bet a very large sum of money if you asked Fripp who is a better guitarist
him or Hendrix... he'd say Hendrix
I remember when people used to argue that Ingway (I cant spell his name) Malmsteen was better that Hendrix
I remember that people used to say Eddie Van Halen was better than Hendrix
the fact that whoever the "greatest" guitarist of any era of pop music always gets compared to Hendrix shows you he must pretty damn good, no?
...and by the way the Smiths has a grand total of one good (actually great) song
"How Soon Is Now"
the rest of their catalog is trash imo
my vote to most overrated overall goes to Madonna... In fact she doesnt even sell that well comparatively speaking
my vote for most overrated on this forum.... Richard James of course
have a nice day
