Yes Mac runs less processes allowing for audio drivers to run a bit smoother, but Apple's recent change to Intel's processors has left many Mac owners very upset. XP is still the best all-around computer. Plus most plugins run better on XP. Mac is still waiting for many to be compatible (this was a problem even before Universal Binary). It is also easier to add storage for PC.
When thinking of laptops, you need to decide between USB and Type II Card Slot. If you wanna use card slot, look into Acer laptops with the new Core 2 Duo chips. If USB is your option, then you have more choices like Acer, Dell, Toshiba, HP, etc.
PC is the broader platform that you will appreciate. Don't worry about stuff you can only get for mac. All you really need is Ableton, Reason, ProTools (for you "industry standard" fiends), some plugins and your hardware.
