It was the plugin delay compensation, my fault
(That explains why I didn't have any fluctuations but just a bit of delay.)

So I can say: recording the MD works perfectly without any fluctuations or delay when I turn off Live's monitoring for that channel. At least for me :)

Hi b0unce,

if you had sync problems with Live 7, it is relatively safe to say that you'll have sync problems in Live 8, too. Please download the Live 8 demo and check this carefully before you buy. It might be a good idea to try different MIDI interfaces if you can, as the interface and its driver is usually the weakest point in MIDI sync connections.

Btw, sorry that we don't comment these sync related threads so often. Sync problems can have many different reasons, so it's quite hard for us to make any definitive statements or provide any solutions. We recently made extensive sync tests with Live (again) and found that Live itself sends a very stable clock when running as the master, especially on Macs. Live usually scored better than the other hosts we tested. On a few Windows PCs we found several instabilities, but all other hosts had the same problems on these machines, too. On Windows machines it highly depends on the motherboard chipsets and how good the drivers perform.

I'm quite busy at the moment as you can probably imagine, but I'll post some more info / tips here soon. If I don't, just give this thread a bump.

Best,
Nico

Cheers for the clarification, 'Monair' gave advice about an edirol interface which I'm going to pursue. There's no danger of me upgrading to live8 prematurely! But in a way it's good to know the problem isn't purely down to what version of live I'm using.
It might be a bit...I dunno, industrially rude, but it would be nice if Ableton recommended a midi interface for best results, based on the tests you guys must do.... at least with OSX, the computers are standardised.

*staying tuned*

ok i realize the last post in here was a year ago, but i just finally solved this problem for myself after hours of pain.
figured i would post this for anyone that might stumble on it, like i did.
this is for pc users as midi-yoke does not work on mac.

download midi-ox and midi-yoke and install.

send your sync signal from ableton to midi-yoke 1

in midi-ox send midi signal from midi-yoke 1 to
the midi that is going to your outbound gear.

somehow it seems like midi-ox takes the time
code and cleans it up, somehow reducing jitter.

i have to use delay compensation on my individual midi tracks in
ableton to get them right, but now that is syncing perfectly also.

hopefully this isn't some bizarre thing that works only on my machine and will help somebody else!

oh and in case you were wondering i was having the exact same jitter problems
with two different soundcard/midi interfaces, so the problem was not in those things.
