OK, here's the full answer. To get the drumrack preset hihats to choke here's what you do:
- you must understand that you must press the IO on the parent drumrack so you can see the notes(if they aren't currently shown)
- now open up one of the problematic subracks and press the marble button that looks like 3 horizontal lines
- press the IO button for the now visible subchain list
- make a note of the first note name you see. In this case it's A#1
- go to the parent and set the hi-at chain incoming note (with the worlds largest pulldown) to A#1
- go back to the sub rack and set the incoming note (with the worlds largest pulldown) to 'all notes'
- set the parent choke group to 1, no that it is selectable
so 25 points for me!!! yay!

it is not necessary to set the top-level chain input to any one note. i.e. you don't have to set it to A#1. just ANYTHING EXCEPT "ALL", and presumably, to keep it playable - something other than what other samples are set to.
the inner rack which it plays can be set to 'all'
or C3 (assuming you haven't changed the output note of the top-level chain)
or whatever (if you change the output note of the top-level chain)

it would be very interesting what procedure Ableton officially recommends for this.
the hotswap isn't working properly (at least for SD or LP). the manual misses detailed information and examples on how to build your own drum kit (e.g. with SessionDrums or LatinPercussion).
so Ableton, what do you recommend in this case ?

Ugg .. Drum racks has been this months Live frustration .. All in all , together with not being able to duplicate groups forward in arrange and everything else i'm close to leaving ..
The one thing i found a bit easier was to work in Drum racks in Session view and work with it as Mixer channels . At least this way it seems a little coherent and recognizable . and not like your reading a Space Shuttle Orbital Re-entry synopsis .

is there a way to know which chain takes precedence in a choke group?
