the easiest way right now is to plug your USB controller in, go to the MIDI tab in the preferences box and make sure all of the options for in/out are lit.
Don't worry about remote for the time being.
Now you can create a midi track, or just drag an instrument device onto the session page of live and it will create one for you.
Go to the midi from box and select ALL.
Hit the record button and you should be getting sound.
Once you have your head around this.
Then i'm sure some one will help you play around with other versions of midi routing
and using the midi plugs and devises available in Live.
