Looking for help via phone (or email) w/ setup questions

Hi - I'm just beginning (have Live 5, but i don't think that matters for my basic setup question or two) and would like to be able to actually talk to someone to help me with some of the basic setup stuff (very basic - but confusing to me...).

I'd just like to be able to call someone and ask a few questions (or email if need be), as i'm getting started...been a bit frustrated with trying to get thru to the 'support' phone line, and they have very limited hours.

I'm in the U.S. on Central time...evenings work best, but i'm flexible. If you're interested, let me know and I can email you my number (or vice versa)...or could do it via email. Just need some basic beginner help...

hi,

i'm using an M-Audio mobile pre usb, to run a mic or keyboard through, and also monitor through it using headphones. i don't know how to do the setup...i'm using Live 5.

here's what i've got so far:
Driver: ASIO
Audio Device: ASIO4ALL v2

i'm trying to record on an 'audio' track:
Audio From: Ext In, 1/2

not sure what to select for "monitor"

so, is all ok as listed above so far, and if so, what 'monitor' choice do i make? 'in' 'auto' or 'off'?

Set your monitor to auto, and press the record arm button. Do you get signal in the channel from your mic plugged into your soundcard?

Have you read the relevant part of the manual? It makes talking about it so much easier.

hi,

i have tried to go through the manual, but at times, i get to terms that i don't understand.

as for your help above, i have chosen 'auto', armed the track, and plugged my mic into the mobile pre usb, and i do get a signal in the left side only of my headphones. (is that what you mean by 'mic plugged into my soundcard'?

should there only be sound on the left side?

also, while i get a signal from the mic, i also hear a reverbarating signal coming through if i tap on the laptop keypad itself or anything nearby, and i don't believe it's being picked up by my mic, but it almost seems like it's being picked up by the laptop's mic itself..?.. not sure if that matters, or if it's an issue.

Ok, that's your notebook on board Mic.

First of all: I'm wondering why you are using ASIO4all does Mobile Pre USB hasn't native ASIO drivers?
If it has, avoid to use ASIO4ALL, and choose your card native ASIO driver on live preferences.


if not you can avoid recording/monitoring that mic by:

- go to asio4all control pannel and turn off the onbord audio device

OR

- go to preferences, audio tab, and turn off all extra inputs you won't use (

OR

- in your audio tracks the input is set to "all inputs", change it just to the intended input.

i'm using ASIO4ALL' because that's what the manual suggested. when i go to 'audio preferences', i only have 3 choices: Asio4All v2 or M-Audio Audiophile or M-Audio USB ASIO. should i use the "M-Audio USB ASIO" instead?

also, do you know why i only hear the mic input in one side of my headphones?

I am on a Mac so I cant really help you about which drivers to use. Sounds indeed like you are picking up input from your onboard mic, turn that off somehow.

The mic is a mono channel so you only get signal on one side. If you have signal, you're in business. If you are not getting anything out your master check your track routing, mute and solo buttons, volume sliders...

Yeap, as I said on my previous reply, it is taking audio from the notebook microphone.

Use M-Audio USB ASIO! that's your audio card ASIO driver.

to avoid only getting signal in the left side only,
open lives preferences,
go to audio.
Open the input config panel.
You will have two columns.
one column is for selecting the inputs as stereo pairs.
The other is there to select inputs as mono ins.
If you only want to use the first two inputs of your sound card for your microphone then select both in put one and input two as mono.
You also have the choice of turning off those two inputs as stereo if you want to.
Now, when you go to the input selector on an audio track you will have input 1 and input 2 availble as mono inputs.
The signal will now be balanced and centered in both sides of your head phones.

I just helped a friend set one of these up in your maudio setup ( should be in the bottom left with the rest of the running apps ) and has the option to link for a mono recording and theres a option for direct monitoring as well only use this when recording as it help with the latency and check your latency buffer as well. Turn the direct monitor off when just using playback.

Also they just released a update for the driver for sp3 for windows xp and for osx on the 13th so if you dont have the latest driver go to the maudio support page and update it.

thanks! now i'm trying to record midi sounds. i can get the signal from the sounds via the computer keyboard, but i've got an M-Audio O2 usb midi controller, and i'm trying to use that, but i can't get that to activate the midi sounds or get any signal.

the manual doesn't go into this much, and i'm a bit confused as to how to set this up, to make the controller play the midi sounds offered under 'devices/instruments'. (i'm assuming i can connect the O2 to my laptop by plugging the usb cable from the O2 to the usb on the laptop..?..) not sure what else to do...when i went to 'audio devices' under 'midi/sync in preferences, i'm not sure what to do, nor how to set up the 'in/out' section of the 'midi from', etc.
