I've never actually seen anyone moderate any thread since joining. I think it's going to become more important now Live's profile has raised a bit.
I like the fact that it's an open forum and think it's probably the reason why is such a good one.
Even the odd troll serves to break the monotony occasionally and it helps to remind oneself that we are still in the real world, and that in the real world, there exist strange creatures called "complete wankers".
IMHO there are only two kinds of human being, decent ones and tossers! in all races, in all religions and in all countries.
It's nice to see the truth of it sometimes

I think guest posting is great. It makes it quick and easy for Live users to contribute. Quite honestly I probably wouldn't have bothered to register here to post (out of sheer laziness) but since I can post as a guest I visit more often and contribute occasionally. If I'm working on a Live project late at night and run into a problem, question, frustration or bug, it's great to be able to come to the site and post in 10 seconds without worrying about logins & passwords.
Some minor moderation would be great though! It really wouldn't be that hard. The totally useless flamebait threads are easy to recognize and could be deleted very quickly. There would be some grey areas of course. The mods could let the relatively harmless semi-OT posts, obnoxious but on-topic opinions, and obligitory mac/pc flamewars slide through while still cleaning up a lot of the dreck and making the forum a nicer place to visit.

That is an extreme and unique example. Furthermore, the high-profile Reaktor mod is no longer a moderator there.astromass wrote:if moderators are added, this board might turn into something like that disgusting reaktor board....some creepy people over there...
A better example would be OSXAudio. I am one of the moderators there, and we have very few problems with trolls. There is barely any moderating necessary, as most of the users care enough about the forum to help keep it working without any intervention. The only moderating activities I have done are moving posts to appropriate forums and editing thread titles to fix all caps and such.
A good moderator is like a friendly bouncer at your neighborhood bar or pub. They tolerate drunkenness, heated arguments and some craziness, but when someone keeps starting fights with the other patrons, he gets booted. And like most bars, the locals are already on top of most problems before any moderator has to step in.
And of course, users must register before posting, using a valid email address. People aren't so quick to throw fire or insults if their username is going to be attached.
Cheers,
jason
