howdy bzzby!

As far as construction goes, I don't have much advise other than to make sure it's quiet in the room. If it's going to be open year round you'll need to make sure it's comfortable in the summer and warm in the winter. You may need a climate control system that doesn't introduce noise to the room. It can be tricky if you need to have a lot of sound isolation stuff installed. The air can get stuffy. Plus you'll want extra electrical sockets in the room so the clients can plug in a bunch of stuff.

As far as gear goes, I can imagine bringing my laptop, external drive, headphones, and interface with me to Iceland (I traveled to Iceland with a big studio mic once, transporting it was easy  ), but I can't imagine bringing my studio monitors and subwoofer too. So I would say that having good monitors in the room is a must. Make it so the clients can bring their own, but not so they have to. A pair of Genelec 8030 and a 7050B subwoofer would be good to have. Also a monitor switching thing like the PreSonus Central Station and a pair of Yamaha NS-10s would be key too. Then you'd have a pretty "industry standard" monitoring system installed, and you could build and tune the room around it.

But in general they are ptty knowledgeable and friendly. Good luck with the project, it looks beautiful.

hey sam - wasss up man ?

yeah - the quiet factor - been thinking about that - can get some strong winds sweeping through the mountains in the north

thanks for this advice too - to be honest this has started cos me and eythor keep going on about having a place to work - well -a couple of them in different countries so we can travel and then when we wanna work somewhere we have a couple of options ... we both went to japan in 2009 and would love one there .. oh my god .. japanese girls are just ..grrrrrrrr... anyways ..

so - at the moment we have been thinking that it would be a modest set up to start with - mainly aimed at us using it and also friends within iceland (plus george's sons are just setting up a performance circus project and are just getting into abe) - to offer at as a place for foreign visitors to come would be nice but we re not promising this will be a state of the art studio where you will be able to finalize projects... well maybe one day .. but as a first project we are looking at it to be good as possible but keeping it modest

so - we will probably arrange tracks there - use the environment as a source of inspiration and focus and use it as a place to put ideas down - but will still have to go into the studio in reykjavik to finish stuff

i cant see us affording to put genelec speakers in there - most icelanders making music have their own equipment - but if you are a foreigner wanting to come and be out in the nature and put down ideas for tracks then it would be suitable for that with adequate equipment

that is the vision at the moment

anyways - take care man - probably wont make it to NY this year

Iceland is completely bancrupt, they owe us a couple of billions. But still a good place if you dont want to disturb your neighbours.

yeah - bit of a shame that people like my mate in the north have had letters from the bank which equates to

"yeah ..sorry that a bunch of corrupt bastards landed this country and its people in the shit ..and even though it isnt your debt mate, here is the bill ... your loan repayments have tripled"

i ll leave it at that - would like to keep the thread on the subject and dont want it to go off topic

Hey Buzby! how's tricks then?

hey... you should check out my friend's blog... he made a studio out of a shipping container.

tweakandtwang

The blog outlines the construction process etc...

It's a small space, but has an awesome vibe and is portable.

you may get some ideas reading it anyway..

hope all is well! say hi to Eythor from me.

hey matt

what's up mate -thanks for that - plenty of empty shipping containers around here somewhere - or maybe not thinking about it as there has been quite an exodus of people recently

i had a quick look and it looks like a great idea - might have to make it look a bit nice on the outside - big container in the middle of the nature might be a bit of an eye-sore

send me an email me mate - shamefully i lost track of your wedding date - it's very likely i ll be in nz next xmas, so a melbourne stop off would nt be too tricky -

take care  - love to jordz

Don't forget about security if you're gonna have equipment there unattended.
Try to make it as difficult as possible to break into the place, doors, windows, roof.

I used to have a studio in an empty house that belongs to a friend that is living abroad, and one night one of my "pals" that sometimes went there, decided to rob the place. He then quickly left the country...

So keep that in mind.

sorry to hear that man - i ve been looking at the tweak and twang link that am posted above - looks like it might be a good idea - probably easier to get a cheap/free container than a summer house and maybe a bit harder to break into

yah man - we were hoping someone might give us an old summer house and then let them have free access to it when it was done up - but i think getting an old container will be much easier
