Just tried this and it seems to work without affecting the sound too much at all.
Digital Clip mode, Drive it and reduce Output by A/B'ing it.
Is it really that simple? Don't know how I missed this!

You guys are in luck. The awesome developer at Airwindows modified his free Clip plugin to do exactly what we're after...it's called "Clip2" and can be found and the top left of the Airwindows page here:

I haven't gotten a chance to play with it yet, so can't give an honest review. I'll get around to using this week and report back.

I created a little Effect Rack for this. Assigned Drive and Output to the same macro knob.
Drive 0db min 10db max
Output 0db min -10db max
Named it Clipper and saved it.
