Seems I still need some clarification: :|

Is the following accurate?

- Max For Live WILL run it's pre-made devices WITHOUT having Max installed?

- Max For Live will allow you to edit pre-made devices & create new ones ONLY if you have Max installed?

Thanks in advance

His question and mine not answered yet? Does Live 9 w/M4L require MAX as well in order to be used (my question) and what about his above?

You need to own Max for Live to either use or edit max patches

To use Max for Live you need to install Max, but you don't need to pay separately for it.

To use Max without Live you do need to pay separately

In Live 8 you have to pay seperately for Max For Live even if you own the suite

In Live 9 you will still have to pay separately for Max For Live unless you buy the suite which will include it.

First, thanks for that clarification.

Now last question: To use Max for Live you need to install Max, but you don't need to pay separately for it.??? If I go from Live 8 Suite to 9 Suite I get M4L, understood (will it be MAX6? I assume yes but don't matter to me personally, as long as anything written previously works with it). Are you talking M4L from Ableton *or* MAX from cycling74? And how is it that we can do that (via serial number/proof of suite 9 purchase?)? Just trying to get this all ironed out beforehand. I did pick up Studio One V2 Pro last week, haven't had time to install and start messing with it...working on other Laptop to install to which decided to get into BSOD repeatedly...but that's another story.

Thanks!

Mike

When you buy M4L you are paying for to right to use Max in the Live context. you install Max in demo mode.
You can't use max on it's own - outside of Live - unless you pay Cycling 74.
I think there are separate crossgrade pricing options as well.
Ableton and Cycling 74 are collaborating on this - I guess they share the profits.

Yeah, the price difference for me is $140 between standard and suite (latter getting you M4L + additional effects/instruments/samples) compared to about $400 for MAX itself. The other parts to it (Gen/Jitter) don't appear to be anything I need so It seems to be a better deal other than having to download MAX and run in demo mode. But if that's the case I would still have to purchase M4L in order to use it with Live 8.....so I am waiting then.

You can't tell it's in demo mode if you launch it from Live.

Thanks all.

Now let me see if I have it straight:

1. You can use Max For Live pre-made devices by downloading & running Max in demo mode.

2. Using Max in demo mode does NOT allow creating or editing of Max For Live devices.

So basically what you get if you have Max For Live but NOT Max is access to pre-made Max For Live devices.

No, you can edit max devices inside live with m4l. WHat you can't do is edit or create them with Max standalone, the difference is that devices created with Max can operate without Live.

Just to elaborate on that..
Max for Live is Max but it only fully runs inside live. You drag into a track a max for live instrument, midi or audio device and you can use it like a normal live thing or you can click on the edit button and start going mental with the objects within that device that process control or signal data. You can also drag in a empty max for live audio/instrument/midi maxpatch shell and create your own device from nothing. You can download max patches and copy them into the special Max for Live instrument/midi/audio max patch shells and use them in live.
What you can't do with Max for Live is open up Max and create max patches without first starting up live... you can create max patches that your friends and family can run on their installations of Max though.
The big irk with Max for Live is creating video patches that use jitter. Jitter works fine, but is deliberating irritating outside of the Max for Live playback mode (ie when you have clicked on the edit button and are in the Max environment).

So, full functionality of Max For Live within Live. That's pretty good!

that's why the whole m4l concept is cool...

but my question is....
say I'm upgrading suite to standard Live...
I've already paid for m4l and the Ableton/AAS instruments in the last version...
do I get the same version of m4l as the people that upgraded to the new suite ?

Contact support. Its a good question. On one hand its like getting the live 8 version of operator during the standard upgrade from suite 7, on the other hand its like getting Max 6 completely free from Cycling 74.

+ 1 I was thinking same thing + you will still be able to choose to install it at install and you should also be getting the Max 6 version at update as well, nice deal if you ask me..
