G4 TiBook & vx pocket

How about a TiBook w/ a vx pocket?
I seem to be getting alot of cracks & studders when I hit the high track marker(somewhere between 16 to 24 tracks running about 5 to 10 plugins).
I also get a terriable latency problem when I set my keyboard to trigger sounds.
I have :
500mhz Tibook
768 mb ram
30 gig 4200 rpm hard drive
running Mac OS 9.2.2
external firewire 20 gig HD(also 4200 rpm)
could it be my hard drives are too slow?
I run other software audio based programs and I dont get studders or latency.
I want to set up my book with a Ram disk,but how much should I set it for?And what do I store on their .The program app????
