is it possible to route single cells from battery to a single audio track in ableton like you can with impulse?

yes but the difference is that 1 battery instance can have 9 x 9 or even more multilayered cells --> this way all drum sounds can be put in one battery instance compared to multiple impulse instances divided over multiple tracks (the rack system of live6 will solve this problem to a certain degree but it still won't be as handy as having all your cells on 1 screen)If I'm understanding this correctly (maybe not) you can do this in impulse too -- cf. section 12.7.5 of the manual for how (impulse offers each sample slot as a separate output, and won't mix a slot internally if some other track is receiving it.)

also battery allows multiple cells to be sent to the same output for creating busses (ex all hihats and cymbals to 1 output , all snares to the next and al kicks to the third). If you do this with impulses you'll need a lot of extra tracks for the individual cells of the impulse which then will have to be sent to the buss tracks
