I got a mackie onyx 1220 plus a powerbook and amotu ultralite.
Lately i did my set up and i figured it out like this :
The firewire goes from motu normally to the laptop.
The main onyx's out ( l-r ) go to the mackie input 3-4.
Also i have connected jack cables from some channels in mackie to motu's analog outs ( the upper ones).
Like that i can normally do my eq'ing while playing and i have the ability to do this by routig my software channels ( up to 4-6) to mackie and be able to manipulate them there.
As for the recording part which is the most important i was also worrying before get it because i knew that it is little bit weird. So i decide ( by the connection of tha main out from mackie's l-r go to motu 3-4 input to record everything back in my computer. How? By using a separate software. Now i am using hijack pro for that which pretty does good the job.
I tried it also with logic but this make the cpu ''worrying'' little bit.
I suppose that this is the best way to do it.
I shall add that i have also connected the control room's out from mackie to my monitors.
I hope this make sense and help. If not i am sure that there are other ways of setting up the whole thing, and i do not thing that using the mackie;s option firewire card change the situation. It should be the same or similar...
Help! Ableton + Mackie Onyx Firewire --> EQ question
Thats massive. Hmm, dont think I want to try that! But thanks for chearing the info!mjl5629 wrote:Here's a link to instructions for the modification of the 1620

Notice this is only for the 1620. The 1640 requires a different operation.
Good Luck with that...
if you really want to use the eq on the onyx juste patch a jack cable out of the aux send into another channel
I know you only have two aux's, but if you're only rcording vocals that isn't a problem
I have the onyx 1220 but I use Pro Tools now for recording, what I sometimes do is just use it as amixer or preamp and I route the signal through the aux's if I want eq
it's not optimal, but it works

happy owner of 1620 here;
this preFader and Direct Out issue is well documented, for me it is no problem, because I then take each channel out to the Mixer again so that I can proceed to ... well Mix (EQ, Stereo, FXs) and finally sum down to a mixdown.
At the beginning I found this following articles helpful. The whole site is helpful, if you can bear with it's kindergarden macDaddy kind of tone:
http://www.tweakheadz.com/setting_up_yo ... o_card.htm
http://www.tweakheadz.com/how_to_hookup_a_mixer.htm
http://www.tweakheadz.com/EQ_and_the_Li ... Audio.html
and make no mistake, there's a wealth of information for many kinds of people at that site.
Good luck.
