This is what Mackie suggests:

It might even work with others as well.
I'm still 10.4.9 and stick with that until it's fixed for sure.
From Apple Discussion forum it seems that many applied the 1.1 update or the audio update with no success. Keep watching.

Hope it helps,

Hi,
There seems to be an update for OSX 10.4 that would possibly solve some audio issues.
Regards,

did anybody else notice what that guy said he was using???
8 core 4gb of ram...

i was sketchy about going with the update but eventually ended up doing it and everything is fine. i'd be pissed if my 6000$ mac was slacking.
Same problem with X25 and Mac OSX 10.4.9

Thanks
having same problem. found this:
"Just found a fix for this from Alesis. Go to their website, support, Photon X25, then download the USBfix zipped folder. Here's the catch- you need a Windows machine in order to perform the firmware update, but if you have that, this fix works once you plug it back into the Mac. I had previously reinstalled the OS back to 10.4.7 when the Photon was giving me the gray screen, but 10.4.10 accidently was installed on my computer, and I went back to the gray screen syndrome. This fix works for me though, and I can keep 10.4.10."
