yourmom wrote:i make music when i'm stoned. i am more creative, i can concentrate better, and i have more patience when i'm high. i do sometimes sit down and write when sober just to double check myself and do a quality control. and sometimes doing technical things (like setting up, configuring, patching, etc) can be a bigger PITA. but i would say 85% of my music is made under the influence of marihuana.

maybe one of these days i will find a different muse. nothing else quite does it, though.
unfortunately I've had similar results

I'd really like to locate that other muse...

Dead sober, maybe some coffee or tea. Even when I used to drink heavily, drinking was only good for playing live, and often I thought it hindered my actual, as opposed to perceived, performance. Acid in small doses is the only drug I've ever took that I thought did anything positive, though too many people I've known have permanently fried themselves to make me recommend LSD.

My feeling is if it's not in you, then drugs won't help, if it is in you and you think you need drugs for a muse, then you probably don't, it's just a matter of retraining your mind.

I totally agree - but after years it can actually be surprisingly hard to re-train

I agree, I quit all drugs for a while in the 90's and was terrified that I wouldn't be able to write, but it oddly enough turned out to be the opposite.

Quarter of an adderall is great when I have time for a three or four hour session of programming beats/melody's and general arranging, keeps me focused as I tend to get distracted easily after an hour or more of staring at live.

Other than that just a couple beers works for getting the creativeness flowing a little.

Weed is a no go when writing or preforming, can't concentrate and I fiddle around way to much with random stuff, never get anything done.

you know what drug kills my music writing? The worst of them all. Relationships, good or bad. I just don't write.

The irony is that what kills the relationship is me not doing what makes me happy, working on music. I need to find somebody that has a hobby and therefor I won't feel guilty spending time writing music, but that's for another topic....rant.....life.

oops sorry stuck key (not)

the biggest bummer/irony is that you would probably go great guns single, but alot of the music would be love/sex motivated - that's why relationships can be bad for music

of course there are exceptions

I am yet to find one though

I'm not 100% on this one. Certain women will require all your free time away from work, and if you have a day job, then yeah this is true. Get a girl who likes your music, and respects that you need to write. I used to go for girls who weren't at all interested in my music, because I thought that meant they liked me for me etc. BS, but really, if she doesn't care about your music, she simply won't understand why you do.

To restate, I've gone from thinking going out with groupies was lame, to realizing if they aren't, it's even worse.

Well thats the funk elastic, the blunt I twist it
The slamafied, (buddafied) funk on your discus
Oh, what you messed with, you got to bare witness
Catch a ho and another ho merry christmas
Yes I smoke shit, straight off the roach clip
I roach it roll the blunt at once to approach it
Forward motion make you sway like the ocean
The herb is more than just a powerful potion

Sober when alone,
2-4 0,5 litres Beer (preferably Holsten Edel) + the Dutchmen when together with my partner(s).
On stage: Depends on where i have to play. Most of the time i just try to get the promoter a box of beer for me. Its 2-6 bears maybe during a show.

drinking is a bad habit kids, dont even start,

i tend to smoke bifters and drink beer and wine when im pissing about making tunes. when i listen to what ive done the next day when im more or less sober and it still sounds good to me then i know that i must be doing something ok.

i generally do mixdowns and completely finish tracks very straight, then when im completely happy with it i crack open a bottle and roll another number.

and so the cycle continues.....
