i don't get why you'd be learning to read music in this day and age. also, if you didn't start early, you're likely never to be able to read in any practical way (whether real sightreading or even just picking out a song pretty quickly).

don't get me wrong, if you're interested, do it. but you can have someone show you all sorts of cool chords/voicings w/o needing to learn how to read them. (the problem with piano vs. something like guitar is that chords that are identical on page aren't identical on the keys.) you can also just learn how to recognize chords and play them. but going through traditional piano lessons isn't going to get you what you want (from what i can tell).

(please note, i'm not knocking trad musicianship, i started playing piano at 7, can read music, etc., just don't think it's anywhere near necessary, most of the successful musicians i know can't read to save their lives.)
