Everything minus the sampler.

The unit comes with no sampler from what I hear.

That kinda sucks....

well, if it's gonna have a usb connection it'll interface well enough for my needs.

what we mean is that a "sampler" to us is something that can "sample" something, not just sample playback.

Well, one thing is clear; Roger Linn Design is putting out the all-digital version whereas Dave Smith is releasing the analog version. Does either offer sampling capablities, I dunno. It's not neccesarily clear. The original Linn Drum was just a drum machine, playing back PCM samples. That;s what I thought this version(s) did too...

There is nothing up on Roger's site (surprise).

well its got a dedicated sample button and you expand the 16meg memory by sticking a CF card in the back (which it streams samples off of in realtime).
if its only a sequencer you probably don't need the 2gig or 4gig memory limit that a CF card is going to give you.

like i said, its a sampler. it might not say so explicitly, but its a sampler. i would bet that just now (2007 or 2008) a non-compete agreement between linn and akai has ended.

just to clarify when i call it a sampler, i mean like how an mpc is a sampler. obviously they don't want to tout this thing as the mpc-killer, but i think that is what they are planning on it being.

I think we all agree that it has "sample playback", but does it have "the ability to SAMPLE" rather than play sounds back? I don't think so. The Sample button looks like it's there to facilitate accessing the sample LAYER. Time will tell...

the info at davesmithinstruments.com wrote: Inputs and outputs include four audio outs, two sampling/audio processing/drum trigger inputs, phones, USB, MIDI in/out, two expression pedal/foot switch inputs, and four additional direct voice outputs for the Analog model.
im thinking its a sampler. the two sampling/audio processing... bit gives it away. that plus the other things i have noted like CF cards. two words by the time this starts getting press "mpc killer"

hey man, thanks for clarifying and highlighting for me - this bit didn't appear in the other pieces of info about this I think... wow! It's going to be way more than an mpc killer though, if it supports live sampling and resampling, for sure! EEK !!!! G.A.S. ATTACK!!!

no problem, just trying to be thorough and make sure to myself that i didnt make it up about it being a sampler. im looking forward to it as well. also im not saying its an mpc killer, just that you won't read a review of it where those words don't come up.

the backlit pads part has me excited. and the dave smith analog synth stuff in the analog model. i doubt i'll be able to get one though, i fully intend to splurge on another monome when the next run of 256s happens. thats probably going to be my only hardware purchase in 08.
