sorry to be naive but why dont you need antivirus software for a mac? Also, if there were a new touch-screen mBC would the price not be way more?

Becasue there aren't that many (3 I think) viruses for Macs. As long as you don't open any old email you bet, you should be fine. (I have never run any antiV stuff in the last 18 years. Never had a problem.)

ok thanks guys, when would you anticipate a new MAC being available to buy if one was unleashed on Tues? Also, would you expect it to cost a lot more?

That's why they created boot camp so you can still enjoy all the viruses that were once only for PCs.

hmmm, bit of catch-22 here. Problem is I want to wait but Apple are offering "buy now pay in 6 months" and the deal runs out on Monday...(coincidence I'm sure!) and I want to take advantage of this...the quote includes a discount from apple direct of about £100 off the £1599 standard price, as I upgraded to 7200rpm so I'm thinking just get it...but...what do I do? I'm the type that will be gutted if something great comes out but I will miss out on the special deal and have to fork out the money now which I didnt want to do!!!!

Dude, just wait, you'll be kicking yourself if you miss a big speedbump by a couple days, 100 pounds or not. You keep asking, and we keep saying...
WAIT.

Just to complicate matters, if you have a friend who's flying via UK airport, you can get further savings there (I'm assuming you're in UK since you mentioned £). Even better if you have a US friend visiting.
Just something to bear in mind

even if you wait, shortly afterwards, there will be a "better" version. some people believe the next gen, or fairly soon, they will release 4core mbp's. probably on the 17" at first, then the 15", and eventually the macbook. i dunno. i'd probably be a little plussed if i bought one now and in a few days, they released that computer at the same price, which is improbable(just look at the new price structure for the macpro and the ipod touch). but you aren't in the market for a 17"' if in fact it is the only version with a 4core processor. and there will surely be problems at first with these computers, so again, i dunno. mine really only runs out of power with a couple of instances of amplitube, and a couple of massives,... at 64 samples! i tried in protoolsle to see how much i could get away with, and had all five insert slots filled with a compressor, an eq, a channel strip, a delay, and a short reverb(all on defaults), on sixteen stereo tracks, as this is protoolsle max for stereo. i did four busses and a master the same way. my reading was 62%. seems fair to me.
buy now, there will always be a better model. mine's good, and a lot of posters here concur-2.16c2d15"mbp. and don't stress bout the numbers. not everyone can have a 12" dick. and not many 12" dickers can do much, but hold it in their hands.

also you wont notice as much performance increase with 2.2 v 2.4 GHz, as much as you will 2 v 4 GB RAM. save on processor put it toward 3rd party RAM.
i have 2.2GHz/2GB, and have no real problems with it.
