MAC SPEC, advice before I buy tomorrow

Post by Hayz » Fri Jan 11, 2008 10:50 pm

Hey there, I've never owned a mac as always had PCs. Just got a quote for a macbook pro, can anyone tell me if I'd need anything else spec wise for production with Live 7and serato? Also, the software codes say none, does this mean I won;t get things like garage band or are these codes relative to other software, is it worth getting any software with
MACBOOK PRO ? Do I need to buy anti-virus software for a macbook pro?
I alos opted for non-glossy screen, was this wise?

NAMM and Macworld in the same week?? WTF?

Didn't they JUST release new laptops? Even if they do make an announcement I don't see how it would make sense to release new laptops and then a week later say "But you can buy this even greater laptop next Tuesday". Not to mention there hasn't really been any buzz about anything other than the shit people wishfully make up in their head.

But, yeah, I would still wait. It couldn't hurt.

Anyone else any thoughts? ALso, if I bought this macbook pro would you opt for any additonal software like Logic Express? Iwork? Or is it not necessary to get anything...

I would definitely wait until Tuesday to see what drops, otherwise your specs look fine. You don't NEED Logic at all, Live can do it all for most people. Now if there's things that you miss in Live that Logic does, that's a different story. But if you don't have a clear and concise need to Logic, don't waste your money yet.

I would strongly suggest waiting. The rumors of touchscreen laptops (tablets) are pretty strong, and they ar bolstered by the success of the iPhone touchscreen technology.

As far as systems go, I would also look into a good old Macbook... almost all of the local DJs running Seratto use them, and Live will run well on them too. You really only need the minimal bump of graphics for Games and Video... just MAX out the RAM and a MacBook would kill.
15" PB 2.5 Ghz, 4 Gig RAM, 750 GB HD, Live 9 still no cue points or program change messages?!?. Doesn't do shit.

If you are running Bootcamp Windows, get Virus protection. Otherwise you are OK.

i like the iwork suite. i have logic pro, if you think you need something besides live for music, you could try logic express, and if you like it, you can upgrade to pro. i'm not a photographer or video editor so aperature and final cut ain't for me. i have friends who love aperature, though, so if you fancy yourself a good photographer, you might like it. otherwise the ilife suite works well. i really like the new iphoto. you know what, you should consider trying garageband before you try logic. may be all you need, and it comes in your computer! oh yeah, a lot of people were carrying on about the processors not powering up correctly, and using coolbook... search the forum for more info. you should love your mbp, though. i love mine!
