OS X.

I use both OS X and XP, and to me, viruses not being an issue is one of the major reasons for using OS X.

This ain't a flame war or 'I have an Apple and you don't' thing. It's about what I think is the best anti-virus solution for musicians (and DJs...and anyone else, too!)

not very helpful to the OP. You could as easily answer, "using a hardware multitracker". they dont get many viruses either.

That's a damn good idea. I think lots of folks will be migrating to hardware, especially for live use.

I'm moving my video and VJing all over to dedicated hardware to avoid general computer and software issues.

Their US market share hovers between 5.5 and 6.5% and globally it's less than 2.5% . It pays to be a minnow in the virus pool anyway, only th ebig fish get attacked.

Yeah I know, controversial at best, reckless at worst, but I don't run AV on my production DAW. And yes, I run XP.

Why?

Because I don't surf the damn 'net on my production DAW. I have four machines, my Ubuntu machine ('cuz I'm curious, and a nerd), my laptop for coding/surfing/Napster/whatever, my standard desktop for doing work, backup DAW, storing music and whatever else, and my main DAW, which I use ONLY as a DAW.

I know for some people it's a cashflow issue, and I respect that. We've all been there. But honestly, the debt I've incurred by having separate environments is worth the peace of mind I get knowing that I'm not doing anything stupid with my DAW. I backup after every creative (or not so creative) session, backup the backup, and, above all, I don't get on the Internet unless I'm downloading updates from NI, Ableton or Propellerheads. Period.

I should also note that part of this debt is due to the fact that I'm 100% legal with all my software.

Again, peace of mind is priceless.

I surf with an Ubuntu partition on an external HD using Firefox these days.

Yes, in an ideal world you would not need internet on your production machine, but as you mentioned, since you need to download updates, bugfixes, drivers etc. onto your production machine, if you have PC then some form of protection is advisable but it can be of the freeware type and it's still best to resist the temptation to surf porn, torrents, and the like.

I just turn off any a/v, a/s and any unnecessary programs and tasks including wireless network etc when I am running music production software.

All of my software and plugins are legit too, hence my maxed out credit cards and lines of credit ....

Now well, i was using avg free becvause it's free and because it's easy to turn off but now they've released their (paying) v8 and the previous free versions are becoming unstable and not fully functional. (?!!!) This is why i'm asking you.
