Is Moog Overrated?
Re: Is Moog Overrated?
I'm a bit surprised actually, hearing you say this..nebulae wrote:I didn't want to rain on the other thread's parade, but I'm wondering if anyone else thinks Moogs are overrated. Yes, it was a pioneer, and yes it has its place in history in the upper echelons of classic synths. But in modern times, I wonder if Moogs shouldn't be in the same category as 909s and 303s...as in do we really need to keep going back to that sound? Hasn't synthesis come a long way? Aren't there new frontiers for us to explore?
Discuss.
I could go into a long discussion here, but I won't..
As a Moog owner I'll ask you; did the piano ever got overrated or obsolete?
It's not about the sound, the status or the history,
it's about what you bang out of the darn thing..
and.. could you please define "modern times" in the context of Moog and music? < haa!
I'll get the popcorn while you try to talk yur way out of that one..
mandatory words for answer: piano, hunderds of years, obsolete..
Ok I'll talk myself out of it, but first you have to explain why you are surprised about me saying that, and why you could write a long discussion but won't.
Naturally, I'm stalling for time here. And just so you know, I was totally thinking about your Voyager purchase when I wrote this post. so HAA right back atcha MOFO!!!!!

^ Also, Mr. Poster, I'll add to my comments (and kiss your sweet sweet ass a little) by saying that your music is fucking outstanding and doesn't sound "Moog"ish at all. But then, I believe what I've heard is pre-Voyager?
I guess my original rant was more about the fact that if I never heard another Phatty bass again, that would be fine with me...or maybe I'm just bored with the Moog sound that I've heard as of late...

because I have it on good authority that you have Bob Moog's sawtooth bite mark around yur neck.. and god knows where,.. else..nebulae wrote:Ok I'll talk myself out of it, but first you have to explain why you are surprised about me saying that,

I actually really like the synth sound in that song, it may not be the most original sound you've ever heard but it sounds good to my ears.Tone Deft wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVnRzEjpUmE&feature=user <-- MGMT - Time To Pretend

I don't even hear sounds anymore as dated or not dated, I just plain love sound. to me there is no such thing as an original synth sound anymore as we haven't really broken any ground in the synthesis world in quite some time. the only group I've ever heard that can come up with sounds that baffle me (can't figure out how they did it) is autechre, but then they sometimes write trash with interesting tones. granular synthesis is even a little bit old now. Until we break some new ground on synths we are "doomed" to hear the same sounds forever, which is fine cause it's about the song not the patch. I don't think any accoustic instruments sound played out, some of which we've been using for what like 1000 years? the moog sound is just another sound that I think we can use for another 1000 years, as well as any other synth or instrument.
I've been using my mc-202 alot lately, which isn't ever gonna sound like something new I don't think but I love that sound.
I guess the moral is, just make the sounds you like and don't worry about what other people are doing.

another thought I'm having here.
my buddy dusty was playing a set in a basement a while back, the crowd naturally just stood there most of the time cause kids in california don't know what to do when someone has a computer on stage most of the time. then all the sudden he started a 4 on the floor beat and played a 2 note arp style bassline on his moog prodigy and all the sudden everybody in the place was shaking ass. it was actually quite a site to see especially considering the song was going nowhere, oddly enough it sounded awesome and it was amazing to see so many kids erupt into dance over something so simple. it was also strange that his incredibly produced tracks couldn't get the same result.
I blame the moog. it's got incredible ass shakability, which is a good thing.

pretty much pre Voyager yes..nebulae wrote:^ Also, Mr. Poster, I'll add to my comments (and kiss your sweet sweet ass a little) by saying that your music is fucking outstanding and doesn't sound "Moog"ish at all. But then, I believe what I've heard is pre-Voyager?
though all very plain jane subtractive, which could've been done very well with the Moog for the mono parts..
I hear what you're saying though..nebulae wrote:I guess my original rant was more about the fact that if I never heard another Phatty bass again, that would be fine with me...or maybe I'm just bored with the Moog sound that I've heard as of late...
that 'typical' Moog bass.. it can get a bit less surprising maybe.. but if the music is good..
though it can do so much more than basses..

didn't mean to diss MGMT, they've got a solid following and do what they do well, I'm just on the bandwagon of old farts that have heard that stuff before.
still, if not Moog, then which synths are deserving of worship?
I'd be interested in what some of you DJ guys can dig up in terms of classic Moog songs.
I'd comment more but I'm not much of a synth whore compared to you lot.
