Anyone used KP with external screen/projector mirroring e.g. using AppleTV and AirPlay successfully?

We looked at supporting VGA mirroring a long while back (back pre-iPad2), but decided not to do it, so wondering what set-ups work well with newer iPads/iOS...?

Appreciate any feedback, cheers... :)
Hi 80, I love version 2 but I can't understand why KP doesn't support video out over VGA or composite.

Nave, Yamaha MMS, Touchable and Animoog to name a few I tried, all mirror their output over VGA. I haven't tried them with composite because that seems to be rarer and just used by video and vj tools.
But I see KP as a vj tool as much as a controller. One of the great poweres of KP would be to bring the audience a little bit further inside what an electronic performer is doing and breaking down the barrier of the laptop by allowing them to connect the graphics with the sound and realising the person performing is manipulating the graphics.

A set I had planned was a multichannel midi and audio affair with KP controlling 8 channels of macros with it's eight banks, each with a different graphic combo. I wanted to run this into the Korg Kaos entrancer visual effects box which was in turn controlled by midi CC's running from the live set. I was then going to split this between a back projection and a flat screen in front of my set up. I was also going to have my set play Nave on my ipad and switch to its wavetable display for sections.
I have a composite out cable that will route knaves audio back to my set and will plug right into the Kaoss Entrancer visual effects box ( for which I have the midi CC clips to control this designed and tested) It was all going fine until I remembered something about KP not working over the composite cable. Fine I thought I have a VGA to composite adapter, there will be loss of quality but the concept was still alive. Now from this thread and another I have discovered VGA output was not implemented! well why not? It doesn't make sense to me. So to do what I had planned I'll have to get another laptop and buy ipad mirroring software so KP's graphics will appear on it's screen and send that to the visual equipment (also requiring the VGA to composite adaptor) but that means a three way wifi communication handling midi one way and mirroring another, doesn't sound too stable or hassle free to me so I'm forced to scrap the whole visual concept.
All the while I have my ipad composite out cable which, if implemented would allow the whole thing to work like a dream with no intermediaries that cause instability and quality loss.
So why are these standard visual peripherals not supported? Mirroring is a very poor work around, I'd rather point a video camera at the ipad but I've tried that and my hands block too much of the view.

Hi ikeaboy,

It's a bug in KP! Currently not even Airplay mirroring to Apple TV will work with KP :( The bug is a complex one for us to fix as we're using a framework that most other apps don't use. But we want to fix it to get the basic level of mirroring out working and then see what additional video out would be useful...

We'll probably have another feature release out next, and then knuckle down on the framework upgrade and video out fix...

Glad to hear - apart from this video issue - that you're finding KP useful... :)

Thanks for the reply. That makes sense, what a pity. ```still great work and I'm glad to hear it's in the roadmap so to speak. A lot of VJ gear, channel mixers etc..., seem to use svideo and composite. Have you any thoughts on working on the Visualiser companion program that was discussed around the time of KP's launch?

Cheers. Back with version 1 we did have a working prototype of Konkreet Visualiser which we gave out to a few artists - Stephan Bodzin & Marc Romboy used it on their tour. Later developments with iOS though suggested we could bypass KV and just use the iOS mirroring/video out route - nice idea, if it worked  KV is still in the back of our minds, but there's just so much to do and so little time...!

I did the first gig with my new liveset last night. I ended up having a camera on a tripod sending video to the Entrancer under midi control. I actually think it looks cooler with my hands in the frame. Necessity the mother of invention eh?
It wouldn't of been possible without your cool application which worked amazingly well. I used 4 banks, for macros on drums, percussion and tuned percussion and another changing setting for the return effects. The snapshots are a lifesaver. So thanks!

There was video and photos taken on the night by a mate who was doing it for the festival ( small festival for experimental electronic music http://www.sonicartswaterford.com ) I'm looking forward to seeing how they turned out. I'll send them on, I'm hoping to do it again I just need to figure out where.

:) sweet! I saw it yesterday , I saw your post too but the forum wouldn't let me log in for some reason. I'm really happy how the projection looks. The Kaoss Entrancers effects are very 80 vfx style and grainy which was a nice contrast to the other high def stuff that was going on. I'm hoping the guy doing the video has more footage of my set that I can send on to you.

Yeah, I like the fact that during the clip with you playing KP, the voice-over is saying it's *not* about the interface, it's about the music... :)

Looks like it was a cool event - did it live up to that intro speech?

And, yes, always interested in any extra footage if you get some... cheers.

Yeah I must get on to him about that, I'm not sure what the combined message is there ha! The intro speech was a mighty all to arms. It was a very different cool festival for this little city.

Hi esky, did it work previously and has stopped working for you? Have you changed your Live/Max version?

Dear Ableton + KP users, as of 2014, we won't be checking this thread very often any more... if you have any questions, comments, feature suggestions, please give us a shout on the Konkreet Labs forum, Facebook or Twitter... Cheers...
