Ok, got it.
So what, specifically, would you like to see?
It seems the wish is for user-initiated update checking that covers both the application and any applicable/usable content, right?
Thanks,

I have to say I agree with Angstrom here.
Auto-updates/ checking is antithetical to running a clean system.
I dont want my apps doing anything I dont tell it to do.
Just do what your supposed to do.. Work.
I even resent my precious Mac OSX giving me a "Software Update" dialog.
It interupts flow, and is like a nag.
*begin rant*
If I wanted to update I would use the "blue Apple" check for updates function.. its a mouseclick away.
Otherwise leave me alone to work and get stuff done. Sheesh
*rant over*
I'll do my own housekeeping... just make it simple.
So +1 for "user-initiated update - check app and content" @ DeSantis suggestion
IMHO

Re: Bull - There are waaay less Simpler and Impulse in 8
I'd be fine with just the passive "check for updates..." option in Live's menu. And notification of updates purely via website, forum, twitter, email, not coupled with the running of the Live application.
If the user has no problems, why change a working system?
Think something like NI's ServiceCenter is overkill for Live's requirements, and personally don't like it at all...

I just realised my post above descended into logical clause gibberish.
ah well, hopefully it makes some sense!

Re: Bull - There are waaay less Simpler and Impulse in 8
because most users have "production" and "housekeeping" modes I think Ableton can best serve the housekeeping mode of the user by a 3 step processDennis DeSantis wrote:Ok, got it.

Thanks,
1: Ableton emails user-relevant update info
2: User chooses to enter the update process
3: Ableton caries out post-install online checks
So, an email might detail specifics
next steps of process
Dear user XXXXX
There are updates to your products
Ableton Live Program - V 8.9.1 [important update]read more
Instrument - collision v1.5 read more
Instrument - sampler v4.7 read more
there are updates to your sample packs
Packs - Latin thingy - v2.2 [important update]read more
Packs - Session Drums - v2.9 read more
Start the Ableton updater, with this link and choose which components to update
Marketing blurb - there are also Free packs for you!
Packs - Session Drums - Amon Tobin presets read more
2: User starts updater, selects components to install
3: Ableton logs download and the post-install data, version numbers, etc. for later emailer usage
If a user has not responded to an email like this for a while, it is possible their mail address died. So develop a clause for that.

Agreed.Angstrom wrote:I say : Do not check for updates, for everyone, all the time.
it will not be popular.
Personally, I don't want any automatic checking for updates. I'll check if I feel the need. A simple email notification would be cool though.
I'd also suggest always keeping application and content/library updates seperated.

Something like that, yes. would be great to simplify it, and even do multiple services at once.Dennis DeSantis wrote:It seems the wish is for user-initiated update checking that covers both the application and any applicable/usable content, right?
Perhaps like this, from the Live Menu:
Sync online:
(Check box opens)
-report a bug yes/no
-update Live yes/no
-update content yes/no

An email with a link to update? That could be used for phishing.
Dennis: I agree with most of the posters here that the updates should be user initiated. Email notification of updates would be nice, however I would also suggest that the "check for updates" menu action give a list of possible updates that the user can pick and choose. Sort of like the way MS does Windows updates.

if the updater application was a standalone then the link could simply start the official updater app.dancerchris wrote:An email with a link to update? That could be used for phishing.
That way there's no chance of phishing, as the link merely opens the Ableton update client app.
Re: Bull - There are waaay less Simpler and Impulse in 8
+1 for passive "check for updates..." & isn't the rest covered by Preferences - Library - "Repair Library" anyways?
