ABLETON LIVE AID!! Lets do something
QUESTION
A member of my family is married to a Sri Lankan girl -they're living in Belgium though, but her family is still over there- who's region was severely hit by the Tsunami .
This cousin and his wife are going over there for 2 months to help his family and the local community to rebuild whatever they can.
They have started a local initiative and opened a bankaccount etc ...
Maybe the community over here would feel more invollved helping out really on the first row ...
If anyone is interested in this private initiative I'll put a copy of his mail in here

hi everybody.
this is a great idea.
this is what we would like to propose should this CD happen,
myself and my Alltrax Music Library partner Gavin Lursen (who is a two time Grammy award winner at The Mastering Lab Hollywood) will master the CD at NO COST in return for having a track and credit included on the CD. either way, no matter what happens, we want to contribute to this important project somehow.

Just in case you didn't get my PM Forge, my internet machine is down at the moment. This is the first time I've been online in days and as such, the first time I've seen this thread.
Count me in in any way I can help, musically or visually.
Forge, you already have some tunes of mine, I'll happily donate anything suitable although I am remixing the old, over-compressed one you said you liked.
Lesson for the day, don't kick your internet machine really hard in the side while it's booting. Even if it usually does cure the case fan noise.

just got this email from CD Baby
"We don't do any duplication here, so you send us the actual product. We'll let you know when we are out, and usually have you send us double what you sent the time before. You can always keep track of your sales and send the restock when you see us getting low."
so if we did go down this route I think it would make more sense for someone in the US to do the duplication.... though as others have said I think it might be a better idea to make a website & do downloads, like Adam says youd need to get a least 100% return on your initial investmant to make it worth while pressing CD's otherwise you may as well have just given that money in the first place.. a CD would be nice, but with downloads there is no real financial risk + we could get the ball rolling quicker & it could stay there as a permanat thing.

cool dpel thats great!
Although at the moment it's looking like the idea might be taking the shape of a website to start with - unless someone out there can get a distributor to offer pressing/distribution etc for the cause?? BUt in reality.....
As Robert Henke from Ableton rightly pointed out, making a CD would be costly and time consuming and those costs could end up detracting from the whole object of raising money - he has kindly offered to put a track and sub-page on his imbalance site with a link to others who do the same so I'm trying to organise a web page with the design help of "sweetjesus" ( not the messiah, just a very naughty boy!...
) and Martyn that offers all the contributions with links to the chosen organisations of the artists.
Robert said that if more than a handful of known artists contribute then he can speak to Ableton about getting a featured link on the website
I can offer a small amount of web space to host some tracks for those who dont have their own, so if anyone else can offer some it will be appreciated as I probably wont have enough space
so get those kindly donated track submissions rolling in, we'll have to create the site and then make it good so that hopefully Ableton will feature it to get us some traffic - then if it does Okay maybe a CD will follow??
If you want to PM me the links to your tracks if you have your own space or email the track if you dont and I'll upload it to mine - you'll have to PM to get my email or PM your email add to me, i put my email up here yesterday and had 2 viruses in my inbox within about half an hour - not saying it was related but made me take it off anyway!

just to add this quote:
"Our experience is -- and our feeling is -- that people want to give to this or nothing. It's not that they want to give in general," said Oxfam Germany director Paul Bendix.

What an excellent idea! Happy to be a part of it and I can take care of the space requirements for my own contribution if it's gonna be a web-based thingy. However I don't actually use Live for final arrangements; thought I should mention this in case it undermines the concept at all...I am a "Live user" but use it more as an idea pad and creative tool than a one-stop shop for production.
dont worry mate - you're a Live user - and this is pretty much the "Live Users Aid" - ( that might have to be working title while we wait and see if the upper echelons of management will let us use "Ableton Live Aid"Moonburnt wrote:What an excellent idea! Things are starting to take shape - Sweetjesus has got off to a good start with the page design and CT43 has brought some encouraging developments to the table too including an offering from Chris Cowie
Bear Funk's impressive upstart Tobias is also donating a tune.
And I've worn away the first few millimeters of my fingers typing! I've also contacted Low Pressings to see if they mind me remixing my first release with them Mon Cong for the purpose
The energy going into this is really encouraging, so let me know how you're all doing with your contributions!

consider this our contribution - donationg our skills and time - at the moment we're working on the website with the idea that each artist will specify the organisation they want a donation to go to - so there will most likely be a logo next to the track name linking to that organisation with a stong urge to the downloader to donate to that charity. We may somehow make it so the donate page comes up before the track downloads, or maybe it will be a donation for visiting the page where if you donate to save the children then download from all the artists who've specified that charity - or whatever really.nerveagent wrote:I have two questions before I commit such a project.
1> What charity will recieve the money?
2> Given the CD idea appears to be ditched, how will the money be raised from a download website?
thanks
scot.
Unfortunately it will have to be a good will project, if people want to just download without donating it's their karma really, but I think in the spirit of it it's not going to be that much of a problem as it will mostly attract people who are interested in helping in the first place.
If you're worried about the track you are considering contributing then I would suggest maybe doing an edit or remix specifically for the purpose - after all that's what live's best at!
This is really about just doing our bit - and being avid Live users the idea is to try and use our existing skills in a selfless way to help however we can - and the more people that put energy in to it the more likely it will be a useful contribution - I'm sure people will appreciate that even if they have already donated to the tsunami or whatever our offers of tracks in return for further donations is a good gesture in the right direction.
As it develops and if the energy we've been putting into it keeps building then I think it could develop into a CD and there has already been alot of interest and promising developments that could lead to good bits of exposure.
Cool, Ableton Live Aid is definitely a name that's begging to be used, hopefully that's possible. As far as payment goes, it would be nice to leave it to karma but i suspect that people are used to taking what they can get for free on the internet. Perhaps if there was a way of giving free previews, and requiring payment to download the full versions, (eg. to a dedicated paypal account), then it might catch more cash.forge wrote:dont worry mate - you're a Live user - and this is pretty much the "Live Users Aid" - ( that might have to be working title while we wait and see if the upper echelons of management will let us use "Ableton Live Aid"
