yes, it's a real shame that it doesn't record parameters such as the length controls, the double and halve buttons. I don't think they really understood the many ways a looper would be used when they made it. I was told something like : "it's just for using live, why would you want to record the parameter changes?" hmmm. yeah. thanks.

It's a shame, because I consider that a real missed opportunity. It actually has some excellent features, but lacks some real basic ones (like being able to record a 'performance' of it.)

A looper device custom designed to sit at the heart of the king of the looping DAWs should have been mind blowingly universe-crushingly awesome. I mean - smooth tight integration, innovative implementation, awe inspiring featureset, incredible ease of use.
Sadly, it is not that.
It's less integrated than a 3rd party VST !

we are now in 2013 and this comment is still true!

pretty embarrassing with the release of 9 in a few weeks.

and I will not be bothering to upgrade to it either!

Gee I wonder why!

looper works for me, just made this bit with it about a month ago:

So i use use it in my "frippertronics" set up with guitar. I will be 100% honest and tell you that it took my a while to streamline my guitar setup so that it always worked without any glitches, but i feel it was worth the day of work i put in to get it right. now i open that template anytime i want to do guitar looping and it works perfect every time. I think having realistic expectations of how much effort it will take to get something to work right is a valuable trait. I come from an era where when i started performing electronic music on stage i had to find ways to cover my ass while reloading samples off 3.5" floppy disks between songs so i might have a bit more patience than you young whippersnappers.

Looper is disappointingly basic. I particularly wish it would let you extract all recorded layers individually rather than just everything up to the last undo. But then most of Live's native devices are pretty rudimentary. There's always third party plugins like Mobius for more adventurous stuff but still I'd give my left arm for a Looper mkii!

I wonder if anyone's delved into hacking Looper with M4L.

it would be cool if Ableton either

A: slipped in an overhauled and more robust Looper on or before the March 5 Live 9 release
B: presented an overhauled and more robust Looper as a 9.x update in a couple of months.

that would be some seriously good lovin IMO.

In 8.3.4 the Multi-purpose button is still not functional. Wether assigned a note number or CC, it just goes whacky. I really would like that fixed!

I think ableton are hugely under estimating what looper could mean to their sales if they were to turn it into the most flexible and integrated looper around.

People are at the stage where they accept pre recorded material in a live context but audiences and performers alike prefer a unique version of a track. It keeps it fresh for the performer which comes across at a show.

I just dont see how ableton can leave looper so half baked and idea and think thats acceptable, they give us the AMAZING ability to pitch shift our loops down on the spot but then dont include a quantizing feature that works. Surely they tested it and found like I did that when u pitch a loop down an octave the subtle timing errors are twice as long also, making the loop that sounds fine when initially played in un use ably out of time.

also whats the point of modern technology when a company only give you one undo?

ITs retarded ableton, FINISH what you started with looper ppPLEASSSSSE!

1.multiple undo's (at the very least)
2.individual loop control (on and off switching at the very least)
3.Better use of midi to function control.(rather than needing 12 buttons to control it all I suggest double useage ability like press and hold achieves something different from a quick press)
