looks very good.
And the R4 even better, but with a much more wallet damage...
Sony can be infuriating with their decisions. It is the case that they did not want to rule the world and be the mother of iPod. Don't ask me to explain that in too much detail, save that in Japan copyright is properly protected and 125 million Japanese people is their test market. And the Japanese market is fundamentally different from the overseas market.buzzcock wrote:What dissappoints me about Hi-MD is that you are tied to Sony's proprietatry BS. You have to use their software to get the sounds to your computer, which only runs on a PC anyway. I've also heard you can only transfer a file one time (Sony's copyright concern). Is this indeed the case? If so, then this is a major inconvenience. Hi-MD's highest record mode is 1.4 mb/s linear PCM, which I believe is equivallent to 16/44.1.
Flash seems to be the way to go since it is universal and cross-platform. Plus, no moving parts! But no one has delivered a good, inexpensive unit. The Edirol R1 just looks junky, and while it's 24 bit, it's limited to 44.1 khz.
On the other hand the Marantz PMD 660 has all the features, but it's limited to 16bit and is big and chunky.
For that size, the Sound Devices 700 series is the way to go, but it sure aint cheap...and it's a bit overkill for what I need.
Can't someone make a MD size Flash recorder with some decent A/D coverters?
Great I have heard some bad things about these concerning the limitations on transfering files between the unit and a pcanonymouse wrote:Diskclaimer wrote:Cool. I've the black one too. This is my 3rd Sony MD portable recorder and has been excellent so far.rsagevik wrote:

The Black one..
Check out this http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?s= ... topic=9752 just incase you need to enable the full functionality available on the Japanese model. Some overseas versions are pre-configured with limitations that can be lifted quite easily by the user.
I use an Audio-technica AT9860 microphone.
Very good for field recording. Great stereo space.

This thing is small, Has USB to transfer, can record at very high quality both as wav and mp3, and is built tough with NO moving parts. That means less noise and less to break. Oh and it runs off of 1 aa battery for many hours. It also has fm that you can record. I usually record with a small sony stereo mic which works good for most close range recordings. I always carry this thing around as moments to record come up often.
Here's the player that I have

I was reading something about that recently - apparently ATRAC 3.5 is the same quality as DAT, and v3.5 is more than 5 years old now, so in other words the old "minidisc quality is shit" idea is over 5 years out of date.rsagevik wrote:really? not aware of that..anonymouse wrote:my MD recorder lets you drop uncompressed wav recordings onto your PC as wav
Thought everything transfered to or recorded was ATRAC`ed..
You need a "parabolic microphone" !SIXTO wrote:I want to go record cars riding by.. birds.. etc..
what is a cheap way to do that with?????
Thanks
