3G iPhone 16GB = $299
I got my 8GB iPhone the day they dropped the price to 399, and honestly this price drop doesn;t bother me at all. It's paid for itself many times in how useful it's been since then, especially moving to a new city and now working outdoors away from normal internet access.
And why would anyone buy an iPhone last week? They've been saying for weeks and months now that new ones were coming at WWDC, oops!

They're dumping the prices, through corporate "subsidies" from AT+T and the likes, and general market aggression... , to what seems to be a seemingly unsustainable price. They have a size and distribution network that makes this feasible, but that's an ugly way of working to me, much like locking messenger into XP, which MS did, or other monopoly-seeking endeavours.
Nothing in there is "hidden knowledge", nor is it a stretch of the imagination, really.
You're saying that it's too cheap because large corporations are able to make a profit if they work together to bring the price down, and that's somehow unfair??? Now you're really reaching with the IE/Microsoft monopoly comparison.
There aren't any small players in the cell phone industry, no mom and pop outfit or monopoly move that Apple/AT&T can make that even comes close to the bullshit Microsoft pulled on Compaq for instance. Like I said you're reaching to try to find problems with what was a well know possibility, that the cell phone companies would subsidize the cost of the phone. just like they do with all the other cell phones
There are plenty of legitimate reasons to hate on Apple, but not for dropping the price of the iPhone because their carriers are willing to pay, that's just plain silly.
Come on, just come out and say machinate, you know you want to. Here, just copy paste this!
Fuck Apple! How dare they take another item I was railing on for being too costly and make it affordable!! First Logic, then this?? Motherfuckers! It's so unfair to those that already bought it! ..... oh wait?
Sorry machinate, but usually you make sense, but your argument here is so far from making any sort of sense that it's kind of funny. Exactly what does cost cuts on what some were calling an overpriced phone to begin with have to do with globalization??djadonis206 wrote:Uh oh - but I believe anyone adopting an Iphone early (such as myself, like last Thursday) would in economic terms, call the money already spent on an Iphone a SUNK COST.

Adonis bought it knowing that the new ones were coming out, a friend of mine managed to get some sort of deal where he was going to pay $99 for the phone.Tarekith wrote:I got my 8GB iPhone the day they dropped the price to 399, and honestly this price drop doesn;t bother me at all. That said, my plan with T-Mobile runs out on the 28th of this month, couldn't be any better timed.
Wrong. That's exactly where monopolys are planted, watered, and grown.kramerica wrote: It's hard for a monopoly to exist in the free market.
Every Free Market in the world has got them, bar none. In places where there isn't a Free Market, you've got State Run. Which is, um, basically the same as a monopoly. Twists and turns, baby.
The new IPhone surely looks interesting, but I really wonder about that Firmware 2.0 functions list?!
Most of these features are standard on Symbian for years. Contact searching and bulk delete and move for Mail, save pictures you receive?! Well, Apple, welcome to the iron age of mobile phone technology, you've come a long way from the bronze ages.

I'm just hoping a super light version of Word and Excel get released, but who knows if that will ever happen..

Where are you getting this from? Seriously. Sources, please.
Losing on the hardware in the hopes of making money off of the goofy little apps? Ridiculous.
NEWSFLASH!!!!!!
APPLE LOSES $1.5 BILLION ON THE SALE OF THE 3G IPHONE, BUT ANNOUNCES A $10 BILLION PROFIT ON THE SALE OF POCKET WIKI AND POCKET WINE SELECTOR FOR THE IPHONE!!!

Did you buy it after May 27th? You get yourself a brand new 3G iPhone free, bitch.djadonis206 wrote:Uh oh - but I believe anyone adopting an Iphone early (such as myself, like last Thursday) would in economic terms, call the money already spent on an Iphone a SUNK COST.
Nothing you can do about it (that money is already spent) it's about what you do next.
...and the plus side is, it'll be much cheaper to replace your phone if you lose it or break it.
people who have Iphones can still upgrade to version 2.0 and enjoy most, if not all the new features
life has been and will always be this way, no real point in feeling weird about it now
I love my phone and lucky for me living in the heart of Seattle my EDGE connection is pretty damn fast
they're great pieces of technology (imagine being on the Iphone development team) and I think everyone should have one

well, this Wired article here: http://www.wired.com/gadgets/wireless/n ... martphonesMachinate wrote:I think it's because they're underbidding the entire industry, basically. explains how the initial release of iPhone ended up actually being very good for the competition because people who had never considered smart phones went in to the stores after the iPhone hype then went for the cheaper models like blackberry
this should be nice and fun for the road:

does anyone else consider interesting the idea of controlling live thru iphone/touch interface ?
right out of my head it could feature:
mixer and transport control, clip launch matrix, performance control for racks, diferent types of control using the different sensors, etc...
i have been studying the sdk and i think it could be achieved either with standart midi (except the much desired feedback i guess... ) or using the live api, although if i remember correcly it is win only ? still ?
also having some nice meters or the ability to have the spectrum window on it would be definatelly on the wish list but would need some serious tapping into live...

The Real Story is here:
http://www.time.com/time/business/artic ... topstories
It's a completely different story than Apple 'losing money' on the hardware in order to make money on the goofy software apps.
Apple and Jobs again prove that they are geniuses: They aren't losing any money at all. They're getting AT&T to lose money. At least until 2010.
Great read.

Ha ha. What a brilliant move. I think if they just announced the software development and whatever internet crap upgrade this would be a total yawn. The price reduction makes it exciting again. Hell, I'll probably get a new one even though I already have one. I'll just put my old one next to my 4 old ipods. And I don't feel screwed by the price reduction. I think this is going to be the norm and the early adopter tax isn't going to phase anybody. The objects are just that sparkly.
Now if Access and Moog would only adopt this policy,

Thankfully I have a wife who's going to get my 1st Gen iPhone so that I can get the 3G. One of the benefits of being married.
+1 on Moog price adoption idea.
