Mac suck for 3D and animation. Also there is a lot of trouble with your color profiles on mac, everything is too bright, you dont get the real feeling. Adobe products are faster on pc, photoshop included. A lot less waiting time.

I own a pc and a mac and I run ableton on both.

I can and do say to everyone I know that I hate Macs, and I do, but the hardware is so well integrated. This translates to less issues when creating music. What i really hate about macs is the OS, it is a hunk of shit! Anyone that says otherwise has just bought into the the propaganda that the marketing machine also know as Apple spews.

Although I may sound like a hypocrite, I assure you that if I could do it again I would not buy into the hype and would have saved myself a G.

Having doubt's about next years computer upgrade being another apple.
I can get a 15inch laptop from dell with an i7 in it for about AU$2500, Apple will charge AS$2699 for a core2duo... much more bang for your buck with the dell.

Have being using mac's for 10 years but they need to pull up their socks in the laptop market as they are starting to fall behind (again).

Looking forward to the new iMac's though - the rumoured core2quad / i7 model could be a winner.

This is EXACTLY the kind of silly BS I addressed in my post. This kind of blanket black and white statement is truly laughable. I HATED the f'ing Mac campaigns for their snarky tone and cult of ultra hipness. It was actually A DETERRENT from me buying a Mac. YOU think the OS is shit. I find it such a joy to be on that I can't stand being on my PC, not on XP, and DEF NOT on Vista. It completely felt like HOME to me and I came to that conclusion on my OWN and in a way that felt ORGANIC.
Juvenile posturing like this is what makes the whole Mac vs. Pc thing so silly. It's just a personal choice based on what your brain connects with.

I use PC at home and Mac at work. Both work fine and I appreciate both for different reasons. Some things are definately a FACT about Mac and Mac OSX though, which makes it a great platform for DAW work.

1) Driver issues are far less problematic because of the restricted amount of hardware.

2) COREMIDI in OSX is a better MIDI protocol that mme or direct music in windows - now your MIDI device still needs to optimize that for best performance and it doesn't mean PC MIDI sucks - but PC MIDI varies more because of driver performance - not helped by having 2 seperate standards.

3) CoreAudio is capable of the lowest latencies around - for example, the new RME Fireface UC can be run as low as 14 samples latency in Mac OSX on a quad or octocore Mac Pro - On a quad or octacore PC, you can get 32 samples in XP and 48 samples in Vista - all still very low, but nonetheless not the lowest. And RME are more noted for their PC drivers.

4) In most cases, Macs require little setup and tweaking.

PC has it's advantages too, but purely for DAW work, if you can spare the extra expense of buying into Mac, it makes sense. Having said this, I run a laptop DAW (Dell XPS 1530) using Vista Ultimate 32 and it is still decent enough performance wise. Although it did require some significant tweaking to get it running well.

BTW - The thing slowing down the Mac Pro tower is almost certainly the Digidesign driver in RCUS's triumphant comparison. Using a Digi 003 is optimized for Protools, it suffers on other platforms and programs. In fact, it's performance was better than I would have expected.

when you've spent 3 to 4 days a year on driver issues/conflicts.. BSOD's..Device conflicts...tattered registries...your BIOS not auto configuring your PCIE slots correctly for your new (insert card here) whereby you have to go in and manually set possibly botching up a working setup as is....A Pcie card not working for your new motherboard out of the hundreds available thereby making you go and search for a new one even though they say it works on some setups and not on some. WTF?! Shall I go on? THEN and ONLY then will you understand the mac side of things.

Instead of making music you wind up spending a week fixing things. You make your career in music and you'll soon realize that In this biz time is money.

I was an application software programmer for years on PC before being in the biz...and while I loved a pc for the sheer power and access it provides..I DO NOT like it for the necessary day in and day out just turn it on and it works application.

This is where the Mac shines. They've basically made it idiot proof. Turn it on and go..just worry about your current skill set on your current application.
AND when i'm making music that's what i want to concentrate on...not getting pulled out of my vibe cuz of errors. F That!


I was on a Dual Quad Core Xeon setup with Winxp pro for the last 2 years and a PC enthusiast for the previous 8. I was always the odd man out trying to understand what the big deal about a mac was.
Seeing most major studios were on it (the time is money principle as it was explained to me AGAIN)....I decided to try out a mac pro just for the hell of it.
gotta say...I get it now...and there aint no way in hell i'm going back.
