these days maybe but at the peak of their fame, they were just as influential as radiohead 8 years ago. So I'm not listing U2 because they're not over-rated anymore. Radiohead is.

First off, this thread is just an invite for a flame war, there is no answer, just opinions, and we ALL love music here. I suspect this thing will be around for all too long. I wholly disagree with most of the posts here, I shouldn't read this thread.

Just beacuse an artist acts like a chode doesn't mean they are overrated. Metallica's first 3/4 albums place them squarely in the camp of musical genii. But U2 does tend to suck the big one.
Ropey - that has NOTHING to do with the actual MUSIC.

Pulsoc - by your own logic, U2's albums pre-Joshua Tree are REALLY amazing, Boy, October, War, Under a Blood Red Sky... If the U2 from 1982 knew the U2 from 2002, they'd probably kill themselves to save humanity. Bono's a good guy, he's turned into a bit of a gold plated cartoon character but at least he does help people and hasn't really made a social ass of himself like most of today's 'stars'.

I'm really disappointed in some of the posters, there's a TON of really really bad music out there are people are nieve enough to criticise the Beatles, Zeppelin, the Cure, Metallica, Nirvana, Radiohead, the Clash, The Smiths/Morrissey. Children, children, children... someday you'll hear the music these bands put out before you were born, there's more to their catalogs than you've heard on radio stations. Go learn a few Beatles albms on guitar and tell me their music is overrated, it's some of the most well written rock music ever.

BTW a big FUCK YOU to the Black Eyed Peas and The Roots for selling the fuck out, their new albums don't blow but they sold the fuck out, so dissapointing...

/end rant

ALL Boy bands must die.
Britney Spears/Christina Uglyera/Jessica&Ashly Simpson all the skanky trained monkies who don't do shit but sing through a vocal processor.

one last  for the road...

Phish.

and dont tell me that i at least have to respect them as the skilled musicians they are....they are a bunch of showboating bar band hippies. yeah i said it. especially that Trey who talks like invented looping a guitar.

although i have much love for Mike Gordon and his Deep End flicks.

You're entitled to your opinion....

.....even if it's stupid! Hahahahaha ;)

Seriously though, are you saying that because Radiohead did some amazing shit, and then the world expected more and more and more amazing shit from them, and they only delivered about 5 albums worth of amazing shit, that they're over-rated? I guess you could be right, but if that's over-rated, then being over-rated is something I will aspire to in my musical career!

U2 had some mediocre songs. Radiohead did too: but you'll really have to search hard for them. There's only a handful, and most of them didn't make it to an album. U2 had them littered all over their catalogue. Do you seriously think that as many people were influenced by U2 as there were by Radiohead? I think you're missing the appreciative audience of both bands: U2 were popular with the general youth public, they had radio hits etc. Radiohead were much more popular with musicians, music lovers and youth radio. At the end of the day, an entire generation knows the songs of U2, but not everyone remembers who Radiohead were. Most kids these days don't know who Radiohead are unless they have an older sibling with musical taste - I think they'll become a band like Pixies or The Smiths, where everyones heard of them, and all the music hardcores have all their albums, but the younger generation haven't got a clue about them. What am I talking about, it's already 9 years since OK Computer was released. How time flies....

I'm interested in who you DO like, Chris J! We're all music lovers here (or so we claim;)). maybe someone among us is an imposter!

Oh and also, anyone who listed The Beatles deserves to have their ears blasted with an air horn until they are deaf, so they never have another chance to misuse the ears they were born with. Have you even listened to The Beatles? Do you realise that virtually all pop music stems from their work? Do you know who John Lennon is? No, I didn't think so....

Santana....

His solos are all exactly the same and completely boring everytime...

His drummer on the other hand is the only reason he ever went anywhere.

Daft Punk's last album was crap, but that doesn't mean they're over-rated. Especially considering they almost single-handedly transformed house music in the 1990s.

The clash

You are kidding right? How old are you? If you were a UK teenager late 70's/80's you'd know how relevant and what a force they were in so many ways. They were a vital part of many people's musical upbringing and a big feature of the musical and cultural landscape for many growing up or just living in Thatcher's Britain. Go listen to This is Radio Clash, nearly anything on London Calling...melody, arrangement, conscious lyrics, amazing production and dubs....damn, Strummer and Jones were punk's Lennon and McCartney. Who knows....maybe you've heard Rock The Casbah a few too many times on the radio.
Check your history and find out why these people are so rated, as time goes by and you're looking back originators blend into the general background of their imitators and it's easy to miss.
Like DeadlyKungFu said...disappointing thread in a way, just because you can't see something doesn't mean it isn't there...Zeppelin, come on...listen to their first album loud...that was 1969, 1969... that must have just blown people's minds!! And the Beatles..pfffft, yeah, whatever....tell that to Atom Heart and his wife when we were all singing along to Abbey Road when they were in the back of my car.
