I have talked to Apple rep from the Apple store, and they say the Powermacs G-5 are still better in performance than the laptops.
:(
I want to buy a computer and there is nothing to buy...

With what applications did he say they were faster? Maybe they just want to get rid of old stock...

Every report I've seen or benchmark test I've read about has indicated that the intel lappies are faster performance-wise, than the G5's of the same Ghz speed. The Logic forum has had a few benchmarks.

I just want to make sure all whine issues are sorted out, and then I'm going for it. I can't decide which one to get. I'm sticking a 160 GB hard drive in it either way, so that's not a concern. But 1.83 or 2.0 or 2.16? 2.16 is probably out of the question because I can't afford it, but I'm having a hard time deciding between the other two.

Dudes, even those new mini's can kick a g5's ass in some tasks.
No point arguing which is better. It's obvious....

The only thing i know, is that there are better macs coming.
And those are the ones i'm saving for

I hope to have a duocore 2ghz mini and a duacore 2.33 ghz macbook by the end of the summer.

I'm still not sure if i'm going to keep the g5 or not...
But it would make sense to keep it as a studio device. It could always end up as a node or so..... :D

Go for the 2.0, at least that's what I would do.

ive gone the pc route first time ever.
running a 2.16 duo core dell 17inch 100gig 1 gb ram with 3 years accidental damage cover for under £1050. Have had time to install all my software yet. Still have my mac desktop though. Been a mac user exclusively since 1997.
Time will tell how it works out :)

i'm running Logic on a macbook and a new mini...

friggin ROCKS!!! the macbook is about 80% of the performance as my Dual 2.5 G5 Tower.

in some tasks (such as streaming audio tracks from the internal drive), the macbook beats the G5.

OK then, where is the test where a mini beats a dual 2Ghz or above G5?
Not to be contradictory, but the G5's still have the advantage of bus size and raw speed, if it's Mhz to Mhz without the bus, like the G5 imacs, yeah, but the tower G5's are still kicking the Intelmacs asses. I'm sure that will change withe the Intel towers, but I'm not giving up my new dual 2.5 machine any time soon. Especially since ALL my software will run on it!

what better a test han Live, eh?

well the PCI-X Dual 2ghz G5 scored 45% in the Live Five Performance Test.
the Mac Mini Core Duo 1.66ghz scored 37%

where as the DualCORE 2ghz G5 scored the same as the Mini... 37%

other comparisons...
Intel Core Duo 2ghz (iMac, MacBook) - 30%
PowerMac G5 dual 2.5ghz (PCI-X) - 32%
PowerMac G5 dual 2.3ghz (dualCORE) - 30%

sorry man

not to mention the 40% faster AMD hard drive controller in the Intel's over the G5 PPC hd controllers.

so the only PPC Mac that TRULEY beats the intels, is the Quad.
and rightfully so.

That's cool, I'm getting a dual 2.5 for peanuts, so I plan on waiting until the Merom macbooks befor abandoning my 1.5 G4 powerbook.
Makes me think that the Merom will more than likely beat the dual G5! :)

Quick question kenn michael, can you use the macbook and G5 as nodes for each other in Logic? Really curious about that? 8O

yes.

as long as Logic 7.2 and 7.2 node software is installed you can run PPC and Intel Macs as nodes/masters interchangeably.

Kenn,

about how much latency does running a node over gigabit add to the whole logic project?
