It's not really a valid point to include people that do these things as part of their career. A chef that can cook dinner, a construction worker that can fix a screen door, a mechanic that can change oil, an accountant that can do taxes. No shit? Fascinating. I'm talking about things that are outside a person's interests but are just part of life.

I've noticed with most guys that I've met that they are in 3 categories:

Guys who can fix cars.
Guys who can fix computers.
Guys who can't fix anything and are lazy.

Someone who can fix both computers and cars is hard to come by. I think computers have taken much of the role of "car fixin" because it's a machine that can be modified and upgraded to add more POWER.

My dad was a car guy. I'm a computer guy... My brother is lazy and knows nothing of either, and can't fix anything. My friends are about half car and half computer. None of them know both. I also have a few friends that know nothing of either (and are super lazy), but they brew beer all the time, so that's their machine to modify...

I know lots of people who can't fix cars (except for misc. things, like changing a tire, checking other minor things), and can't repair a broken computer, except minor things, but can do all sorts of other handyman-like stuff. Yardwork, household work, fix this, fix that, etc. Where do they fall?

Sometimes the simplest answer is the best answer. I think a lot of people pick up these skills from their parents and each new generation has a little more "pay for somebody to do it" and less "do it yourself" to hand down to the next. There used to be a sense of pride in things you can do and now it's a sense of pride in what you own and pay for.

i just pull out my $20 and pay someone else to fix my car.. wait a second, my car doesn't need fixing... just servicing! i do know a thing or two about computers though... enough to build my own and do some basic troubleshooting for others.

but can you

HACK THE GIBSON?

i tend to go the "I BETTER BE ABLE TO FIX THIS SHIT MYSELF" route until i hit a wall, then wait a few months before i pay someone to do anything
