Ableton saw fit to include a User mode on Push and my only expectation was that the User mode would function in a similar manner to other midi controllers which have this feature and as is described in the Live 9 manual.
"All of Push’s built-in functionality can be disabled via User Mode. This allows Push to be reprogrammed to control alternate functions in Live or other software".

The standard methods by which other manufacturers incorporate a user mode in their midi controllers is via a software editor and/or allowing changes directly from the controller (as is possible in things like the Korg padKontrol and some Akai MPDs).

Due to the price and sheer potential of Push, I don't think it unreasonable to have expected at least a half decent User mode.

Having some knowledge of what is happening "under the bonnet" when the User button is pressed does not change the accepted definition of "User mode" when applied to midi controllers. Furthermore, internal midi switching is not something that is unique to Push or of interest to most users who simply want to compose, play and record music with the minimum of hassle.

I think you are misunderstanding me. I am indeed complaining about one of Push's many features (which could easily be rectified by a simple software update) but I have never stated that I have no use for Push.
The only other thing I mentioned in this thread was that features which look great in a video may not be so straight forward when you come to use them yourself.
In the video you linked that shows the new melodic step sequencer, the guy mainly use 8ths in a 1 bar sequence with a seven note range. This scenario is the easiest way to use the step sequencer (albeit with the limit of an 8th grid, 1 bar and 1 octave) and therefore shows it in the best possible light.
Near the end of the video, where he shows how to make an 8 bar sequences, it can be seen that his workaround also affects the grid size so he has had to edit the input notes in bar 5 to shorten them to 16ths (which he doesn't actually talk about).
