oh yes

my rather excessive presence on this forum today is testament to just how badly I've been suffering that affliction, but In having to deal with it while I'm getting on with a tune, enjoying my last moments with Live 3 I started getting into a different train of thought about just how unique Live 3 is as is - and I totally understand why alot of people were saying they didn't want midi/vst.

in some ways it may always be more unique than Live 4 because you DON'T have the option of midi - so you end up doing things in a much more adaptive and distinctive way - I've heard tracks many times that I've been able to say were definitely done with the help of live, but perhaps with 4 the only fault of it is the very fact that we can use things like absynth etc more readily and thus the lines may get a little blurred and live becomes more the sequencer than the sound itself.

Don't get me wrong, I think Live 4 wil be absolutely, spot on my ultimate
music making tool , But Live 3 by it's very nature had a very unique way of doing things, which shined through - if you used absynth, you would use it as an audio file and manipulate it differently, while now we'll be more tempted to do real time modulation of Absynth by it's own parameters, rather than Live's

I doubt I'll stop using it that way, but thinking about it, in a way it's a
shame we weren't on 3 longer as Live 3 hs definitely made it's mark on this particular moment in music technology history with the whole clip
automation/real time timestretching thing - it's created an amazingly unique sound.

But regardless I'm so insanely excited about getting my hands on 4 - I guess that's when I find out that what I was just saying was complete bollocks, and instead Live 4 is about to take that uniqueness and completely nail it and change the face of this moment in music technology history!!!!!

Chord : play one midi note results in the corresponding chord ...
Pitch : the midi assignable pitch everyone was longing for in audio, but in midi ... eg. to dynamically change boring patterns

Dreaming on here, reading the Autotune 4 manual and what do I find but a midi-to-audio-pitch converter!!!! With this thing opened in Live you can play live iinput audio from a midi controller (thinking about my midi guitar here). What about putting just a huge delay and then the Autotune 4 as effects on a live input track? This will make you play the eccoes of what you just played three seconds ago!!!! Wicked! ;-) Will it hurt the brain! Probably initially....

Btw, have you noticed how you can monitor the signal levels in between the efx , with a nice touch to make distinction between midi level meter [ led style] and audio [ "full line" ] .. . same consistency in session view ...

midi inputs

Post by 5dots » Fri Jun 04, 2004 9:54 pm

what i'd like to know is, will i be allowed more than two midi devices? i use a cheap evolution midi keyboard, an akai mpd16, and an evolution x-session. i don't usually use them all in the same song (hard to do with the keyboard and the mpd), but i do use them all in a live performance setting.

if i can't use more than two, can someone at least explain to me why i'm limited to two?

The code of Live 4 has been optimized for the G4 and G5 processor according to "Altivec". On PC you have SEE2 with the Pentium 4 processor but appearently only Altivec optimization comes with this update.

Such software code optimization means that the software doesn't have to run every single line because it can now address big "chunks of code" that has been built into the processor routines as shortcuts. Kind of...

Your Hardware is the limit.
For MIDI Sequencing you can have as much Devices / MIDI Ports
as you whish.

Very excited for the new upgrade. But will it include looping without warping. Please say yes.
Thanks,

Did you read the word "Altivec" somewhere? because All I could find was a vague "Audio performance has been optimized for Macintosh computers." This does NOT necessarily mean Altivec. They might have just tweakd a few lines of code and called it "optimized"

Either way, I'm stoked. Just more stoked with ALTIVEC.
15" PB 2.5 Ghz, 4 Gig RAM, 750 GB HD, Live 9 still no cue points or program change messages?!?. Doesn't do shit.

Yes, maybe. But I hope not. Would come off pretty lame doing that.
