Honestly, it would be understandable if there was only ONE photo, but various? No way. Oh and this from the people who just recently said that they lifted over 400 uncleared samples in their debut album.
Jesus. I know ZERO about Justice besides the Tension video, but in the photo, the cable is the black cord with the grey rectangular tip that's very obviously a USB cable. It's obvious to me it was a mistake...... and who the fuck really cares? I'm certain Daft Punk leave VERY little to chance, try playing a show in a robot costume and stare at a screen behind a tinted helmet?

The sample stealing sounded really pretty clever IMO, mostly less than one second long samples according to them, hardly anything that anybody should have to pay for.

Again, not a 'fan', just think it's silly how this stuff actually affects a groups bottom line, if you don't like their music don't buy it.

The usb cable popping out during a live show has happened to me before,
why couldn't it happen to Gaspard?

^ denial.

it was bullshit enough when they played in front of Marshall stacks. they give electronic acts a bad name, it's embarrassing, they should be flogged, I'd pay to see that.

But let's not forget that these DJ people are there to play music, not necessarily create it on the fly. One of the mistakes that hardcore Ableton nerds tend to make is that you need to be hands on constantly, glitching as much as possible, with two hands on the effects at all times - like how a bus driver keeps their hands on the steering wheel.

This may be what you want, but what the specific crowd you're in front of wants may be something else entirely. I can understand why a DJ like this would get on stage, press play, and want to play out the first few minutes of a tune before they get busy mixing in the next song. Ableton users tend to think it's bad to play one song for five minutes without turning it inside out with effects and tricks. Playing songs is the DJ's job.
Amen to that.

The funny part of all this to me is even if he is triggering scenes in Live or what not, it's still 90% pre-produced music, the show is still more about seeing them more or less remix their work live, which is fine. It just cracks me up as mainly a guitar player to see people take it so seriously that his USB cable came unplugged, and act like that is some sort of indication he's faking it. I mean the most you can do with a drum pad is add a few hits, trigger a scene, and play with the faders anyway?? Not that that's bad or unworthy, it just doesn't strike me as half the crime of a guitar player being unplugged while a backing CD plays his parts etc.

On top of it, the guy states that it was a mistake, and that he hadn't noticed yet, hence him trying to find out what going on with a blank look on his face as he stares at the monitor. Not even close to a Mili Vanili, yet here we go spreading FUD about a famous musician, how original, a bunch of unpaid or barely paid performers mocking their own that make it.
And a double amen to that

Seriously, can we STFU about the dead rodent and these guys already?

Arguments about the quality of their work aside, I don't really understand what the big deal is here.

Why is there this need on the part of some to believe that it was more than just a gear mishap? The simplest explanation is that the cable came unplugged during the show. There's even pictures of him plugging back in a few moments later. This, or something very similar, hasn't happened to any of you? Couldn't possibly happen to any of you?

But then I don't see why having some stage dressing (like, say, some empty Marshall cabinets and a bunch of cool-looking cords and lights) is embarrassing? They want to give people something to look at besides two guys poking at some laptops for 60-80 minutes.

Kraftwerk has their video thing and some minimal lighting work. Daft Punk has the pyramid and the costumes and the light show. Justice have some amplifier cabinets and a light show.

It's how you get around the fact that a large part of your audience gets bored/feels cheated if all they have to look at for an hour is some guys poking inscrutably at laptops.

do these arguments boil down to:

"it's live electronic music, why do you expect so much" ?

I can see all this hype being a pop thing. I've only been playing for 4 or so years now, but I have noticed a sort of "shift" in the age of mainstream electronic music enthusiasts who attend my more mainstream gigs. I was playing to people my own age when I started, now I am playing to people 4-6 years younger than me.

I've noticed that dancefloors in general are taking notice of what is going on, it's no long about going out and getting music crammed in every sensory hole, it's about going and having an experience, part of that being knowing whats going on.

Because "live" is becoming cool and as frequent as DJs, you're seen to be cool if you can catch someone out for bullshitting because it means you know something. I think this is what all the hype is about, and I reckon it will get worse (or better, can't figure it out).

I'll be sitting with popcorn for sure.

Restarting is the only way, as far as I know. Macs don't have this problem. One of the many reasons why a Macbook (Pro) is the best option for live performance...
One of the reasons a Lemur is the best option ;)

Unplug it, plug it back in, you're up and running within 7 seconds

Before I play out anywhere I use half a roll of the damn stuff on my firewire connection...
