dave - thanks, I'm shattered. @#$%!!!!!! :( makes sense, thanks for sobering up that dream. maybe the geeks will come up with a new way of routing audio, n

subfunk - 2GHz 2Gb RAM core duo laptop with an Edirol UA101 sound card. pretty average specs for the computer. I'm in no mood to spend time mucking with hardware, things are OK these days. <knock on wood.>

man fanboys...  Axel!!!!!!!

that makes a lot of sense.

the unfinished burrito sits on the left below the MPC.

as i got windows down to 4ms the moment it was needed, both points are valid: osx is better in that point, and, it doesn't matter really.

i prefer the flexibilities i get over those some milliseconds :) (and i guess you still have a hdd, not an ssd.. so your latencies can go up to 30ms just from accessing that .. :))

just kidding.

i don't have much that-much-latency relevant stuff. most stuff works okay with 32ms, stuff that matters normally works very well with 8ms. some projects (programming stuff) would need sub-millisecond latencies.. now THAT is an issue to tackle :)

and yes, i hope we make some big progresses reducing the latencies in general. a factor 10 reduction would be great.

well i only have a 2.16 ghz C2D / 4gb ram machine myself... does the trick usually studios have not much faster computers either, just better sound cards that allow to go even lower.

my old trusty scratchamp2 allows me to reach ridiculous low latencies... with Traktor 1ms for example without a stretch. (that is the only application where i need personally super low latencies, actually i don't really need it either, but it's easy to reach them, so i use it)
don't know about maschine yet, never bothered to check that, it plays.

I wonder if my larger latencies help me have better midi sync performance than most people. lately I just run at 48kHz with a medium sized buffer, I think I'm around 32mS but haven't tested it for a while.

hm yeah scratchamp2 had low latencies.. but audio8 isn't much worse.

yep, and they both sound kick ass on PAs, loads of 'pressure' actually the scratchamp2 has even a little more 'oomph'

So I have a question in regards to Maschine...

I have an MPD 24 and Battery 3.

I found the Battery software kind of funky to use... granted I maybe didn't give it a big enough going over. I love Battery's samples, but I usually would just load a preset kit and go because the fiddling seemed counter productive. Its been a while, but I seem to remember things like the cells all being in a long line rather than the 4 x 4 grid and the order being very odd (criss-crossing) on the presets that caused me to loose interest. It seemed to work one way by hand and another way all together by preset when I watched what happened while hitting this pad or that.

Is Maschine like that? I mean I realize this thread is all about the bad-assness of Maschine so anything that gets thrown in by comparison is going to get shot down. So, I'm not asking, "is Maschine better than Battery" because the response to that question is more than obvious at this point.

I guess what I really want to know is how confusing is it?...
if your little brother who had never used any music software came to you and asked you to recommend something he could learn to fiddle with while he's hanging out at the South Pole with no internet is this a viable option or should he stick with something more basic?

well i never read a single page of the manual (yet), no need for that, i think it says all... two hours and you jump in joy and fun twiddling around.
that is given you worked with audio software before and know the basics of sequencing, tweaking, sampling and midi.
a total noob probably has to go through the real small manual that it is.

as to battery, i only had once version 1 and can only remember it a little bit... but liked it.

there are NI templates specific for battery, that means there is a full auto mapping for it right out of the box, if you still like to use battery.
and then you can jump between battery and maschine and ableton control back and forth while being within ableton and twiddle everything from one box plus any other plug or function that allows midi... yum.

cool. I wasn't talking about your little brother... I have to admit.. I was talking about me  So, I have some experience.

I haven't fired Battery up in well over a year. not since I got Live 7 Suite and.... Drumracks. I couldn't figure out how to slave it at the time and it just fell by the way side. I think its time.

I'd love to have a go with Maschine but I can't spend 500 bucks to do it without knowing that it IS going to be a better way to do things... not that it may be. Having said that though... I've really been trying to figure out a better way to get my drums going, so I'm open to exploration.

NI probably has an update or two available for Battery too... the templates you're referring to, do you mean for Battery and MPD 32; or do you mean templates specifically for the Battery software - i.e. use with Live etc and a change of experience with the Battery software??

maschine comes with factory templates for ableton live (including a midi remote script) traktor, battery, MCU, massive, pro - 53, guru, reaktor, ez drummer, addictive drums, etc, etc, etc

all those you can instantly control with maschine... and if you don't like them it is dead easy to create your own or simply alter them to your needs with the editor (what i did for traktor, ableton and logic, until now, about to built more... )

and of course it does not has to suit everyone the same way... for me personally it's perfect (because it serves so much in one unit so well), but i also tried it in a shop two times and spend a few hours before i went for it and got hooked. maybe try a friend who has one...?

trying yourself is always the best!
