Hi,
I just purchased a Nord Modular G1 Rack, and hooked it up to Live NOT using the External Instrument plugin, but just by assigning a MIDI Track to the right MIDI channel. This works without problems.
Now, I want to use some of the knobs on the Modular as remote controls for Live, so I assigned them to MIDI CC numbers. When I turn the knobs, Live detects the knob changes (I enabled the remote option on the corresponding MIDI port). Now if I set the MIDI track to receive on the channel that the Modular is sending to, and play the clip in Session View, the MIDI CC changes get recorded into the clip! What the hell? Automation recording in Session View? I thought this was impossible?
Now for more weirdness: when I have a clip playing and record into into Arrangement View, and turn knobs, the automation is NOT recorded to the MIDI track in Arrangement View. Why is this happening? Is a MIDI track without any MIDI devices not able to record MIDI CC data?
I'm quite new with MIDI, so I probably overlooked something. Any ideas why I'm experiencing this behaviour?
Using Nord Modular knobs as controller: automation weirdness
Right so I'm feeling I'm starting to get my head around this. The setup described in the previous post involved a MIDI feedback loop (on a single MIDI track, MIDI IN on the same port and channel as the MIDI OUT). I didn't notice this, but this probably explains the recording-automation behaviour in Session View, right?
So what about this setup:
Track 1: MIDI Track with MIDI clips sending notes to the Modular. MIDI IN is disabled on this track.
Track 2: MIDI track with MIDI IN from the Modular. No MIDI out.
So if i play a loop on Track 1, I would be able to record the knob movements on Track 2 right? This will then result in clips ONLY containing automation data. For playback, I would then route this automation to Track 1.
Is this the correct way to do it? Would the automation recording work in Session View, or only in Arrangement View? Or is it at all impossible to record CC data on a MIDI track containing no MIDI devices (I mean, in Session View, in a clip you can create envelopes for all CC numbers, but in arrangement View I do not seem to be able to access CCs).
Cheers!
