Hello to my Norwegian Friends.
I have recently taken a project to write a song/historical narrative about a Norwegian family that emigrated to New Zealand in 1873. A large number of Norwegians made the decision around this time to start a new life here. In doing the research, I have found that this is also my own heritage.

I have a question about 'Traditional Norwegian Music'. Is there such a thing? Are there old Norwegian folk songs with typical melody patterns? I would like to incorporate these recognizable melody styles into the song if appropriate. I would appreciate any tips or recommendations.
Many Thanks. Greg.

p.s. she did next to her deeply traditional songs, electronic experimental stuff as well also providing her stuff for remixes, there is a whole album with remixed tracks of her... well worth checking out.
i got goose pimples and tears in my eyes when i heard her live 2007 at Pohoda festival, no joke. amazingly spiritual.

Mari Boine is Norwegian, but the Hardanger fiddle is more what I'd call Norwegian folklore.
Check this out
The thing about the fiddle is four extra strings that resonate, but aren't bowed. If I remember correctly.
Also, the music of (classical composer) Edvard Grieg is heavily influenced by traditional folk music.

Yeah hardanger fiddle music is true norwegian folk music. Check out gåte for a little modern version of the hole thing. Almost all their songs are remakes of old norwegian folk music.
And since i am norwegian and enjoy all sort of music i would have to say black metal with a giant smile on my face. Or svartmetall as we say in norwegian:D

Wow.. this is ALL very cool stuff. I had no Idea about the hardanger fiddle, its sympathetic strings and its use of various tunings. I had already somewhat settled on the use of a fiddle and soprano and alto recorders to flavor the music. I wanted a maritime influence as well. This could work well seeing as you folks have such a strong folk music history which includes fiddles/hardanger and flutes. The Jew's harp/munnharpe might be an interesting sound to play with too.
As an aside I have been able to trace my own Norwegian family's roots back to the 1830's. Shite, I might have a small cultural revival on my hands!!
