using Kontakt 3 in Live 7
using Kontakt 3 in Live 7
hey folks,
Just got Kontakt3 with some xmas cash -- wondering if anyone here uses it in Live7 regularly, and more particularly, can you only use it just as a regular plugin, or can you take advantage in live7 of K3's multi-output mixer? (that is, so you could have multiple instruments in K3 running into multiple channels in Live7 from just one plugin instance of K3, also with midi data going through each channel.....and thereby not need to keep opening new instances of K3 in Live.....needless to say the ability to do this would make a big CPU difference....).
not sure if / how this works. thanks...

It is possible to use the multi outs so you only need one kontakt instance...
there are several ways of doing it but I generally do this
add kontakt on a midi track the default output will go to this channel.
I then add as needed extra midi tracks with the ableton external instrument device, route the midi to the desired input on kontakt and the output from the desired output
and bob is your uncle..
You can also do the same using an instrument rack so everything is nice and tidy in one midi track..
hope that helps

Just upgraded to Live 7 so I've got to check that... I knew the external instrument trick but not that one.ashtonron wrote:It is possible to use the multi outs so you only need one kontakt instance...

I don't understand that -- everything meaning what, exactly? Because you'd still need individual midi tracks for recording midi data for each respective instrument....if everything is in one rack, but you still have separate channels for each....? sorry just not getting it....ashtonron wrote:

you are correct my description was very quick.. this is really a convenience technique for saving a multi out kontakt configuration...mholloway wrote:I don't understand that -- everything meaning what, exactly? you would have to use sepearte midi tracks to control the various instruments.
or you may just want to create a layered instrument that responds to the one midi clip.. but with specific external effects for each kontakt instrument.
hope that makes sense

A cleaner way would also to use the EXTERNAL Instrument.
Create an instance of Kontakt 3, then create another midi track.
On the new midi track add an External instrument.
On the external instrument, route 'midi to' -> Kontakt 3
and 'audio from' St.2 (or St.3, or whatever output you set your next instrument to in Kontakt)
Now you can have two tracks, two instruments, and different effects and levels for each.
I do this all the time, with Chris Hein Bass on Midi 1 / St.1, and Chris Hein GTR on Midi 2/St.2 in Kontakt. Then I can put a different amp-sim on both instruments, and control/automate separately!
Good luck, and welcome to Live!!!

Kontakt 3 + Live 7 Rocks!
With all routing possibilities you ever need i guess!
Have Fun and remember to start Kontakt 3 again after making your routings! and then you could make them default!?

Re: using Kontakt 3 in Live 7
I've just been playing about with Kontact3, and it seems very similar to Abletons Simpler, don't you think?
I just found that I had more control over the simpler (which I use for drums) and could do more with it, and much less fiddling about...
Or have I just not discovered Kontacts features yet?
