Can I give away my Operator licence?

Post by six_o_clock_crow » Thu Jan 08, 2009 3:19 pm

I have been thinking about this for some time.

I got Operator free when I upgraded from Live Lite before xmas. I was doubly lucky as I got it even though I bought a boxed upgrade from a shop, which was £40.00 cheaper than the download version.

I don't use soft synths for my music. I have tried many of them, usually just to check out what the fuss is, and actually Operator would be one of my favourites in terms of the sound, the integration with Live, and the CPU economy. But I don't use it.

I've seen lots of people posting saying they wish they'd been eligible for the Operator deal, and I feel kind of guilty that I lucked out when I don't really need it.

So, my question is, can I transfer my licence to someone free of charge? I am sure I have read on the forum that people can't sell a licence given free as part of the upgrade deal. But if I make it clear I am giving it away, will Ableton let me do this?

If I can then I'll have to come up with an idea for a competition! :D I am happy for someone at Ableton to be involved so they can be sure I am not accepting money from someone on the sly (e.g. deactivating my licence in advance.)

What do you think?

Only Ableton can answer this for you. They clearly don't have a FAQ for this one

I'm warning you, you might regret this. I have a DX11 four-op synth that I retired because of Operator, the DX-11 is too dirty sounding. I like dirt, I'm a circuitbender but Operator just really kicks it's butt.

Giveaways are nice though. Feed the world! :D

Thanks for the warning DJ :D , but I'm very sure I wont coz like I say I just don't use soft synths.

Stigmama - can't do this as Ableton don't allow the sale of licences given away as part of a bundle (as far as I am aware.)

Besides, like I say, I got it free and from reading the forum posts at the time of the offer I feel bad that so many people clealry could use a copy of Operator, but missed out on the deal.

This forum has been so good to me, I want to give something back to the community, y'know?

I was under the impression that you couldn't sell / transfer individual product licenses that were bought as part of a bundled product, ie Live Suite and Orchestral Instrument Collection. But you didn't buy a bundled product, you bought Live and got Operator for free which I'd have thought is no different from you buying Live and then buying Operator.

So I can't see a problem with you selling it, though you'll need to send an email to Ableton to confirm one way or another. But if they say no I'd say the chances of letting you give it away instead are zero, its the transferring of the license that is the issue rather than if any money exchanges hands.

Wow, good man. Nice to see a good selfless act every now and then.

I find it hard to believe Ableton wouldn't allow something like that under the circumstances, if you're open about it.

One thought that might get you round the bundled license thing is to transfer your entire license over to someone, who in exchange transfers a single Live 7 license to you. Of course this still has to be done through ableton, so you still need their permission I guess.

You can sell it but you can not give it away!

You must sell it for exactly 0 dollars.

In all of the Namm excitement, let me just revisit this topic...

I got a very nice email from support (impressively, this was yesterday - right in the middle of what must been a v.busy day!), but they can't transfer the licence for free due to the system that administrates licences.

As it happens, I had been having second thoughts yesterday anyway, as I was reading about all the new features and Max for Live. Although I don't really use soft-synths now, I reckon Operator will be perfect for trying some of the new features out.

I might even upgrade to the Suite the way I'm feeling at the moment :D
