Vista 64 bit
Vista 64 bit
Hi,
Just bought a new laptop. It came with Vista 64bit. I like the OS... runs smooth and solid.
Is there a 64bit version of Live 7.x I can install and use instead of the 32bit version I was using on my old machine?
Thanks for your help.

I run an HP in 64-bit Vista. Windows has two "Program Files" folders
"Program Files" - is for 64 bit apps
"Program Files (x86)" - is for 32 bit apps.
When installing something it's automatically put into the correct folder. I don't notice any problems running Live at all and I tend to push it pretty hard.
The only thing you'll need to watch out for is hardware - make sure that whatever your using for an interface has 64-bit drivers. Check the manufacturer's website and forums - especially before you buy. I'm currently using a PreSonus Firebox. The drivers we're a bit sketchy at first (couple years ago) but seem stable enough now (just don't jiggle the firewire cable).

as the last poster said.
The biggest issue is going to be driver support in V64. Many manufacturers do not have V64 drivers and don't intend to support it as windows 7 will soon be on us.
Many DAW manufacturers are seeing how well windows 7 does before committing to 64 bit versions of their program - I know Sonar has 64 bit versions and Cubase 4 has a beta 64 bit version plus the new C5 will include a 64 bit version alongside the 32 bit version and Reaper also has 64 bit. But most other DAWS are still on 32 bit and are likely to be so until the next year or 2. Maintaining backward compatibility with 32 bit will still need to be retained too, as only a tiny minority of people are running 64 bit o/s and although that is expected to turn around in the next 2-3 years, 32 bit support will still need to be offered.
Most 32 bit programs run fine on Vista 64 from what I've been told and you may still get a slight performance boost, just not the full monty.

I run Vista 64 Business for almost a year on a macpro and for about half a year on a macbookpro. First I was pretty annoyed by Vista and I had to replace Explorer by XYplorer to have fun and turn off UAC, but other than that it is smoother and better for what I do than XP.
Running 32 bit software works great (you don't need compatibility mode if the app isn't from the stone ages - 16bit won't run at all), and if the programmers did compile it correctly, a 32 bit app can use 4 gig of ram on Vista 64 - which for many apps is enough, since each and every 32 bit app can use 4 Gig at the same time (provided you have a lot of ram).
Memory management in Vista is much better and it runs more smoothly on 8 core machines. Vista feels faster than OSX on the same machine (which I don't use often anyway, just as a way to run the odd Final Cut Session).
Ableton Suite 7 runs nicely here as far as I can tell, although it's multithreading isn't the best, most of the time it's not using 8 cores at all but maybe 1-2.
I use a Yamaha MW12 USB mixer (runs great with the native windows USB Codec and the Yamaha drivers for ASIO) and a Presonus Firebox. The later has drivers for 64 Bit Vista, but gives me a lot of problems every now and then (simply stops working after a time etc.) - still haven't found the cause. Seems to be better when bus powered...
>rant on<
The support guys from presonus were telling me, that "apple doesn't recommend using peripherals with bootcamp" (WTF?) which in turn they interpret as "we don't support it as well" - their forum is full with people having exactly the same problems on non-mac-hardware so it is simply arrogant and stupid.
Definitely my first and last presonus gear.
>rant off<
Vista 64 is my favorite OS at the moment - Windows 7 looks more like a paid-for-vista-servicepack to me (as does Snowleopard)...
A 64 bit DAW would render almost every vst useless at the moment since 64 bit software can't use 32 bit plugins, so using 32 bit apps is the way to go for quite some time as was said before.
As my main job I do 3D graphics with Softimage XSI etc. and even in that area where raw renderpower is most critical, 64 bit has taken a long time to be really supported by plugins etc.. Thankfully I can work 99% of the time in 64 bit nowadays
The only thing missing is Quicktime - there's no 64 bit version for Windows.
And: 64 bit isn't that much about speed (you're happy if you get 10% more out of it), but mostly about being able to use more RAM. And there it really shines, but in your laptop, the hardware will most likely limit what you can plug in.
Cheers,

Smoothly? I ran Vista64 on a Q6600 overclocked to 3.11ghz a core and had 4GB of PC800 RAM and it ran like a dog. It was usable, but not even close to smooth. Then again, I guess smooth is a relative term.

Smooth as in: XP 32 on the same MP (6GB Ram and 8800 GT) stutters on interaction and doesn't deal as well with the 8 cores.
I installed both OS' because in the beginning I wasn't sure about Vista as well as 64bit, since I read a lot of bad things about it, but now I don't use XP32 anymore.
And I think I can call myself rather picky and I run about 50 - 100 different apps (3D, Graphics, Video, Audio) on the machine.
I forgot: I deactivated Aero as well, but mostly since I find it ugly, not because of speed.
But sure, everybody has his own mileage I guess
Cheers,
Thomas

I'm happy to see people have been able to run Live. I have Vista 64 on my mac pro, and so far, besides a big pain with getting the video card driver to work, it has worked flawlessly. I also do 3D graphics work and it is much better suited than OS X...I do not care for Logic Studio. I find it clunky compared to Cubase or Sonar. I do own it and have used it for over a year, but the workflow feels slower. I was thinking of switching my music setup to Vista and utilize Live 8. But, Sonar has Bitbridge to help run 32 bit plugins I do not think Live has that. Does anyone have experience running NI synths or other VI's in Live on Vista 64?

ewtwolf: what video card do you have on the MP?
Latest Nvidia drivers are running fine here, don't know about ATI though...
Live 7 works fine for me as it is, 8 may be even better...
I run the complete u-he line including Zebra2, but also Kore Player, Kontakt Demo, Sample Tank Free, Ivory and dozens of effects with Live 7 on Vista 64 and have no problems related to Vista or 64 bit.
I have to check out Sonar 64 - Bitbridge sounds interesting!
Cheers,
Thomas

I've got the ATI HD 2600 XT in my MP...ATI's current drivers wouldn't register in Vista, I had to clean out all signs of the driver and uninstall the card through device manager. Bootcamp drivers wouldn't work either. Then after running windows update a couple times, a new ati driver version showed up. It installed fine...after 5 hours of pulling my hair out...I haven't tried installing the Catalyst Control Panel for ati yet...no real need for it currently.
Well, I'm excited to see people running live successfully on x64...I might stick with OS X just to keep things simple. I hope Ableton does support it natively. I realize most users are on laptops, I'd still like to milk all the performance I can get, and the extra memory isn't bad too. More memory means more complex projects.

Man this is bad!hoffman2k wrote:64-bit audio mixing engine.. Different kind of cake.IP wrote:wait a minute isnt line 64bit? why i thought it was :/
I was planing to get a new pc with up to 8g ram and a 64bit OS but if Live will see only the 3 GB then is useless ...
and let me guess ...live 8 will be not 64bit..
I can't speak for Ableton, but its pretty safe to assume that any developer with half a brain won't optimize his cross-platform software for 64-bit processing just before the 2 major 64-bit OS' are going to be updated.IP wrote:Man this is bad!hoffman2k wrote:64-bit audio mixing engine.. Windows 7 beta is out and Vista will be forgotten faster than you can say "Longhorn".
Osx 10.6 is being seeded to developers too and is all about under the hood improvements.
They could develop Live 9 or even Live 8.x for the OS', but they'll need more than just the developers builds.. Like an actual release date for both windows and OSX.
Driver compatibility for all the gear they're supposed to support perhaps..
